With the success of “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” — the television program that cast Connie Fisher as Maria in the current West End revival of The Sound of Music — comes the news that another London revival will cast its leads through the same reality-TV process.
BBC News reports that the title player in an upcoming West End revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be found through a television reality show. Graham Norton, who hosted “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?,” will host the upcoming program as well, which is titled “Any Dream Will Do,” a song title from Joseph.
Composer Lloyd Webber as well as a panel of experts — and television viewers — will help cast Joseph as well as an actress to play the Narrator and an actor to play Pharaoh/Elvis.

Posted: 12/20/06 at 10:17amI'm glad to know that Connie Fisher is getting work again. I loved her as Cricket and more recently as Jigger in the revival of Carousel.

After watching the Kenwright production of the show last yr which is touring UK now... it's NOTHING compared to the 91 Palladium RUG production which was SO fab (since I saw it with Linzi!)
I mean... IF they've bringing back the show with the same production... in all fairness, I don't mind, I just wanna relive the show and I do sincerely hope they have some standbys for those reality show people!

Posted: 12/20/06 at 10:59amWe only got rid of Joseph in London last year, why they feel the need to bring it back (albeit in a 'new production') escapes me. Surely people aren't going to want to see it again so soon, even with whichever annoying moppet they cast this time...

Posted: 12/20/06 at 11:03amA part of me will always love Joseph because it was the first musical I was ever in, but damn, this is pathetic. I feel the same about the Grease thing. It makes the genre look cheap when you resort it to a reality show! What's next? Casting for current plays using reality shows? Choose the next Phantom? Elphaba? Oy.

Posted: 12/20/06 at 1:02pmWasn't Connie Fisher only contracted to play 2 perfomances a week, and then all hell broke loose when the ticketbuyers wanted to see "their" Maria 8 times a week?

Posted: 12/20/06 at 1:27pmI thought the standby does 2 performances and Connie was going to originally do 6.

Okay, I am not entirely opposed to this reality show/musical theater marriage....and How Do You Solve a Problem was a little bit of a guilty pleasure...
But why do they have to keep reviving such CRAP!?!?!

Well they could try choosing shows that aren't awful dreck. Or mounting an original production.
What a crazy concept.

Posted: 12/20/06 at 3:11pmWhy wouldn't she do the role 8 times a week? It's not a difficult role and she can't handle it then I'm not sure why she was picked.

The actually could find a really kick ass narrator this way.
They could find a kick-ass narrator by holding auditions with real Equity actresses. I don't want a narrator that sings like an American Idol finalist.
