She's a smart cookie. She knew she didn't have a chance of winning. If their was going to be an upset it would have been Janney not Foster.

I don't remember anything out of the ordinary. There was no reason to believe she expected to win. Was it somehow different than her reaction to losing for Little Women or Drowsy Chaperone?

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary either. I think it was just the Sutton haters. I dont think she expected that she would win and it was just an unfortunate camera angle.

Yeah, I sorta thought it was the annual "Ohmigod, did you see Sutton's face?!?!" thread. She became popular during Millie and as we all know, any show, person or artist who becomes successful enough to be recognized by non-BWW audiences must be crapped on mercilessly. It's not the artist's fault, but if you want to hang with the trendy crowd, you must not ever admit to enjoying, admiring or even acknowledging the success of that which is popular.

No one can know for sure why her facial expression was the way it was, but I'm a fan of hers (not a huge fan, but I do love her) and the FIRST sentence that left my mouth when they panned her face was "Whoa! Sutton looks PISSED!"

Who cares? If you didn't win one of the biggest awards in theater (even if you knew you did not have a chance), wouldn't you be disappointed too?

Also, I've taken pictures of people at random moments, and often it seems as if the person is "pissed" or "too happy" or whatever despite what they actually felt. I think people are exaggerating based on a couple of seconds of footage.

I'm sorry, I watched it a couple times and me and my roommate cannot see what was so negative about her reaction. We see it as a "You go girl" facial expression.

Although she has the bitchface here, you can see after they announce Alice's name, she applauds and smiles like a good sport. The bitchface is simply a reaction... And I'd assume that she'd be upset by that point anyways, because her show wasn't doing that well by that point. (A repeat of Young Frankenstein?)

I think that would have been my face after Ripley's slightly obnoxious screaming at the beginning of her speech, whether I had lost to her or not.

I don't know why I think this and I have never noticed this before but in that, particular, shot Sutton looks like a cross between Lesley Ann Warren and Margot Kidder?

I think it's just...her face. It's just a weird expression, but it doesn't seem like it was angry to me
