I love the movie "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore (I'm in love with fairy-tale retellings in general. I'm given to understand that it is being turned into a musical, with music by a composer named Marcy Heisler.
Last I heard, it would hit Broadway around fall 2007. Does anyone have any further news?
Another favorite movie of mine is "Somewhere in Time." I've always thought that it would make a superb musical with the right composer. According to the INSITE webpage (International Network of Somewhere In Time Enthusiasts), there are plans as of this past March to make it into a Broadway musical...they just haven't gotten a composer yet. So, does anyone have any news on these two shows?

Bump because SHN's press page for "Ever After" still says April 2009. I'd venture to guess this isn't the case anymore.
Any info?

Posted: 1/15/09 at 3:15pmIt's been cancelled. Ever After that is. SHN needs to find shows that will actually be performed, as last season The Wiz and Ha'Penny Bridge were all introduced but then canned, along with Whistle Down the Wind. THREE SHOWS in one season that never happened.

He has long since abandoned that to rights issues. Or at least thats what he said when asked about it last spring.
About Ever After, is the canceling definite b/c in the recent mailing SHN sent it still made it sound like it was a go. Seems like if it were canceled they would not bother saying it is still scheduled.

Posted: 1/15/09 at 5:28pmI was told that they didn't really have enough money for things like sets and costumes and that it was not a "guaranteed hit" for them to go out on a limb for casting and taking the time to train everyone so they decided it would be best not to do the show at all at this given time.

Posted: 1/15/09 at 5:40pmKen Davenport is currently actively developing "Somewhere In Time," and I believe is co-authoring it. That is definitely being worked on.

"Also, does anyone know what's going on with the Adam Guettel version of "Princess Bride?""
I have heard there some pretty major disagreements with William Goldman over royalties and billing, so Guettel shelved the project rather than go through the hassle. It's a shame. I had been saying for quite some time that The Princess Bride would work very well as musical with the right team. And I'm sure that the true lyric sopranos have lost the potential of a great role in Buttercup, as I can not imagine Guettel making her a belter.

Posted: 1/15/09 at 7:04pmI don't think it ever went throuh final casting stages, they've known for a while that it was probably not going to happen anytime soon.

Posted: 1/15/09 at 7:41pmI visited Richard Matheson a few months ago (the author of the novel Bid Time Return, which is, of course, Somewhere In Time). I think he told me they'd found a composer, and while I don't want to be held to it, memory-wise, I think it was the guy who did Little Women, Jason Howland (is that his name?). I may be misremembering, but that's what's sticking in my head.

Jason Howland would be a really good fit for SOMEWHERE IN TIME. I think his work on LITTLE WOMEN shows such potential (I love that CD, though the show didn't work for me).

Posted: 1/16/09 at 9:57amAt a Q&A with Marcy and Zina on Monday, Marcy said that they were all set to bring EVER AFTER to Broadway, and then there were no theaters available. Now, of course, that's not the case anymore, but it's also not the best time to open a new show. She said they're kind of "hovering" until the time is right.

I believe that one of the problems of bringing EVER AFTER to Broadway, in addition to the economy, is that the producers lost a lot of money with CRY BABY. Nothing's a surefire hit anymore, and so much money can be lost that you can't be too careful.
I do hope EVER AFTER comes. It's a wonderful musical.
