You know what...Go look at the bios of some of the stars on Broadway right now...Most if not all of them studied Musical theater in college. You may not think it, but having a degree in theater helps a lot with casting directors.
Have you ever taken a walk through the East Village?
I would but I live in Minnesota. It sucks I don't get enough muscial theatre experience here that's why I want to study it. I have no dance experience and very little voice, but I've got a lot of straight theater because that is all people like around here, if they like it at all.
That fact that you're not from New York may explain it. I've seen the bios in the PLaybills yes but do you know how many people there are in this world who look up at the stage and say, "I can do that!"
That's true, but while they say they can do that a lot of them most likely cannot. That's where the education helps. Then the directors know that you passionate because you've completed this program helping you to get to where you want to be.
Just get a real education.
in what...I can't imagine doing anything other than theater.
Theatre is understandable. But doing musical theatre in college is not an education.
It's different for everyone.
Just think. Do you wanna be one of these starving East Village actors writing down your pathetic ideas on a paper napkin in the back of a dirty pizza joint on Ave B?
If it works? I can always figure something out if I need a paycheck but that is second to my real ambition. Plus what an education is to you is different than what it is to me. You probably had a lot more experience and knowledge than I do.

Wow, I think I might apply for that summer program. The only problem is that it is so long...but I can learn a lot and not be rushed.

hey i donno any skools but i know a gr8 theater camp, either camp broadway or stagedoor manor its in upstate ny
someone mentioned florida state. be very cautious...they only like to take around 5 people a year. they are always looking for guys, but girls have to be top notch dancers. (trust me i went there for 4 years and was in the theatre program) i would actually recommend palm beach atlantic university in south florida. they have a really good program and it is growing. every show i have seen there has been really remarkable. plus there is a lot of community theatre in the area as well as performing arts centers and professional theatres. think about it.
Ithaca College in Upstate NY. Kerry Butler (Little Shop, Hairspray) and Michelle Federer (Wicked) are alumns.
What is so wrong with AMDA? I have been planning to go to Univisity of Michigan and AMDA.. I have looked into it and I don't really see what is so bad about it.

Here is a link to a forum which any prospective MT student should read. It's an invaluable resource. ddtruitt gives excellent advice here, and is right that bronxboundexpress has a definite bias about NYU. No idea why but it obviously didn't work out for her there, it isn't for everyone. But it's one of the top programs in the country and offers a great education where you are able to double major if you choose to work that hard. Anyway, here's that link I mentioned.

If you're not considering Oklahoma City University for mt school, then you're not serious about musical theater!
Kelli O'Hara, Stacey Logan, Kristin...that's all ya need to say.
CCM!!! It's... amazing.
O and whoever was wondering about high schools- Cincinnati School For the Creative and Performing Arts is good.
I bet if you went to Avenue B and asked all those starving artists, as you say, if they have a college education, the majority would say NO. I have a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre and I went to a liberal arts school which means I got to study what I love and study various other subjects that gave me a well rounded education and has allowed me to make more money than someone without a degree. I am a certified teacher in Illinois which allows me to sub, something you cannot do without a degree and I make more per hour than someone who works at Starbuck's or what not because I have that degree as well (NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH WORKING AT STARBUCK'S). I don't have a lot of money, but I'm not a starving artist. People who live on the street and can't get by are people who lack ambition or resources, not just creative people who can't make it big.
If you didn't like school that's your thing. But to say it's a waste of money is ridiculous, people change careers all the time and with a degree you can have a better career than without one. (most of the time, unless you start your business or something like the street smart folks on the new Apprentice, but that also takes a lot of money)

Hi! I'm a freshman at DeSales University! It is a wonderful theatre school. There are several concentrations in the program. I am an acting/directing major. There isn't a musical theatre track, but you can take voice lessons and dance classes, which I am doing. I love it at DeSales! The people are so nice and the professors really know what they are talking about since they have worked in the profession. E-mail me if you have any questions jco0@desales.edu. I can't sing
DeSales' praises enough!
