SUNY Purchase

Kent State University
Wright State University
Emerson College
University of Michigan
I am a junior too and looking at many of the same schools. Except I'm looking for performance study. I want to be infront of the lights not behind.

Throw your money away and throw your life away if you want. Either you have it or you don't. A degree isn't gonna do jack. College is for getting an education. Get that and study privatly on the side if you want or spend your time outside shcool hittin the streets. This is coming from a former acting major at NYU. BFA my a**.

What's cap-21? I keep seeing it associated with Tisch at NYU.
collaborative arts project 21st century. what a laugh they are.
I'd like to have the education I come from a small town in Minnesota and don't get enough of what I need there and just find it easier to find all the experience I need in one place i.e: a college or conservatory. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but in this case I believe the best way to go is getting a post secondary education. It worked for my dad for several years. It'll work for me too.
I don't mean to offend anyone it's just the way I feel. I want the education cuz I think it will help.
Wagner College is a really good school for theatre because it has several theatre programs (administration, education, tech/design/management, and performance), and also produces really good productions (though I guess I'm biased). It was rated #1 in the Princeton Review for 'Best College Theatre'.

Ok, I know I may be biased...but I just wanted to talk a little bit about Penn State University's program. PSU's BFA musical theater program is one of the top theater schools in the country. I believe last year it was rated 3rd just behind CCM and Michigan. When I was applying to schools I was accepted to Ithaca, Syracuse, NYU-Cap21, Point Park and Elon. PSU was by far my top choice, so i accepted right away. Its a small program-I only have 9 in my class...there are about 45 in the program total. We get very intensive training..both of my voice teachers came from working at Ithaca, my dance teacher was in 3 shows on Broadway. This year Craig Carnelia(Working) directed his production of "Life After High School" at our school. We performed last year in NYC at Lincoln Center in front of hundreds of inportant "theater people". I am truly getting one of the best educations you could ask for. Right now every single one of our graduates are working. Check it out...seriously. And if you have any questions feel free to email me at klt199@psu.edu. xoxo!
As a current AMDA student, I have kept quiet for quite some time and have been trying to figure how to say what I really feel about the program. If you told me a year ago that I was going to AMDA I would've laughed in your face, however my attempts to study music ed to become a band director(as a back-up career, HAH) fell through, and I was left with the choice of taking a year off or auditioning for the one place that still auditioning. So off to AMDA it was. I admit I have issues with the program but overall I am surprising happy. AMDA is very big on "typing" which happens in the business, but is unfortunate for those who have worked for years on being a belter with a strong soprano range and now they don't know what to do with me. Aside from that you will learn, there are some amazing teachers and if you do your work instead of seeing it as a place to make lots of friends your teachers will respect you and you will come out actually knowing something. So I'm done now, continue stating your opinions and I will give you mine.

Thanx for the input...I aminterested and I have been lookign the only problem with some of these schools is that they have dance as part of the audition process, and as of now I have no real dance experience. I hope to change that over the summer as I am planning to attend the Northwestern intesive summer program...If any one has attended this more input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx,
Kaija
Thanx to everyone for all the great information. It's been a great help cuz some of those college searches are kind of confusing.
Thanx again,

University of The Arts in Philadelphia has an incredible theater program. the head of the program is Charlie Gilbert who wrote the original Assasins that Sondheim and weidman bought. he has a great system of musical theatre technique called SAVI that's really cool. some stars went ther too. La Chanze, Justin Guarini, and Sutton Foster does a lot of Vocal training with Patricia Raine, the Vocal teacher in the program. i went to the Pre-College institute last year and auditioned last december. i really have hopes of getting in.
thanx
Northwestern has a Musical Theater certification program that is a joint venture of the Theater Department and the School of Music, both of which are considered to be excellent.
Someone mentioned Interlochen...
for Musical Theatre---Camp is the best choice
for Musical Theatre---the school is not a good choice.
That's all.
I am looking at the Northwestern Summer Program right now to see what it's like. It sounds very good.
Yes, Northwestern's "cherub" program, as it is known, is quite good. It is an excellent opportunity to work with college professors and get a taste of college life.

Does that program have a technical theatre part to it?
I believe it does. check out the website...It is only for students who have just compleated their junior year in High school.

hey, i'm kinda new to this, but i found this thread really interesting b/c i'm in college and studying business, but i've studied voice for the past 5 years and now for the past year and a half or so, i've been bitten with the broadway bug, mainly b/c of my teacher. anyway, i really don't know anything about anything so i was curious about options available after graduation, like masters degree programs, and also the success of going such a route. anything at all would help. thanks!!
It does...
NU's Cherub program
All This is helping a lot.
Thanx everyone,

You're all doomed if you study musical theatre in college! Think very very hard about this!
