I am interested in pursuing a career on Broadway and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good school for muscial theater on the East Coast. I've already been looking at AMDA and The Boston Consevatory as well as Tisch. If you have any other reccommendations they would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,

dont go to amda (my friends call it "scamda")
it's bad

CAP21 at Tisch at NYU -- It's great -- I'll be there starting in the fall semester!

Other great schools = The Boston Conservatory, Syracuse University, Carnegie-Mellon University, University of Cincinatti College Conservatory of Music (CCM)...

Ithaca College, Point Park University, Elon University, Shenandoah University, and the Hartt School at UHartford all have decent programs that are growing more and more.

While surfing the net, I was struck by the number of Broadway performers who studied at CCM.
Amda is not that bad. Although I didn't go, I used to hang out there a lot, and I have seen their showcases. I was acquaintances with Jesse Tyler Ferguson while he was attending the school. It's very good training. My only gripe is that it is overpriced. I would go if I had the open availabilities with my schedule, but I am old now and have to make a living.

I was going to go to AMDA but they only give out the AA degree and that is equivlant to a HS diploma...Dont waist your money.

Here are some good schools in Cali where you can get a degree...make contacts (its all about talent and who you know) and get a degree that you can have a back up in.
Cali
USC
UCLA
Cal State Long Beach
San. Fran. State U.
Cal State. U. Northridge

NY
Julliard
Eugene Lang (New School)
NYU

Are you a HS student?
I am a Junior in HS and I am majoring in theatre at college..and those are the ones I am applyhing to (more or less). but AMDA is a waist of time. Also if you live in Los Angeles and you want some acting lessons or the make some connections you can IM me and I can tell you about some great acting studios.
Take care!

Here are some other awesome schools

Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music - you'll receive a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre

and

Kent State University - You'll receive a BFA

Both have great programs and are in Ohio, around the cleveland area. They also both have Showcases in NYC

Baldwin Wallace has many of its students in professional shows i.e. the National Tour of The Full Monty, Mama Mia on Broadway, and a recent grad is working on the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in London.

Alice Ripley and Drew Carey attended KSU. KSU brings in master classes all the time. Recently, Stephen Schwartz was in to hold mock auditions and talk about his process with WICKED.

Try Niagara University. Number 13 in the nation for Undergrad work. Would be higher if they had a better theatre. Small conservatory based school. Excellent education and excellent teacher/student relationship. Plus the head of the program is good friends with a number of boradway legends who visit and see shows frequently. Eg: Chita Rivera, Gary Beach, Kander and Ebb, Strouse. Kander and Ebb are known to visit each time a musical of theirs is done and work at reshaping the show based on the venue and even doing some rewrites. They workshopped revisions for Steel Pier there.

I just read this thread. Sure, theatre schools for older, college aged kids. But are there any for high school kids? Like, I found the school online that FAME was based on, but its site was down. Does anyone know any New York High Schools for the arts?

Orange County, CA has 4 arts high schools

Academy of Performing Arts at Huntinghon Beach High School

Orange County High School of the Arts (about 19 years old, a school all on its own, alumni include Susan Egan, Matt Morrison, and Stephanie Block)

South Orange County High School of the Arts in Dana Point

California Conservatory of the Arts in Mission Viejo I think...

In New York I think the "FAME school" WAS called La Guardia, but had a name change really recently.

I think the Fame school was High School of the Performing Arts and it closed. I think LaGuardia is something different.
I only know of one arts school in Minnesota. It's called Perpich and it's pretty small compared to a lot of high schools in large cities.

No, the Fame school (The High School of Performing Arts) and the High School of Music & Art became one organization in 1961.

If you are at going to study in New York, my advice would be to take private acting lessons, private singing lessons and private dance lessons and forget about a Musical Theater school.
Thanx for all the info this is really helping me out.
Studying musical theatre in college is the most stupid and pointless thing anyone can do.
may I ask why that is? I think it's good to get the experience you need, plus having a degree in the field can help a lot even though not a lot of people think so.
