I thought it was one of the best shows of the decade because I saw it recently. Then I went to the same local production with an understudy and it sucked. I just think it isn't as good as it is now made out to be.

No. It's still the best original musical written in the past 10 years despite you're wanting to sound cool about it.

Defensive. It's just a show. How am I trying to be cool?
Them fightin' words.
How can you judge a show on a local production? What if the production just sucked?
Where was this production?

I saw the local production twice. The first time was good but had a good actress. The second had a bad actress (understudy) and I saw more flaws with it. I didn't like it at all. I just think a show shouldn't rely so much on one performance. Though it has a lovely score.
Sorry - it's amazing. If anything it's offensively underrated. Besides for a few people on this board (and I know Jordan and I are among them, there are others too...) few people consider it incredible, or even know about, even people who love theatre. So....no I don't see how that could be anywhere near overrated.
Also - did you see the original broadway production? You also say you saw the show at a regional theatre with an u/s as Caroline (I presume that's what you meant), so I would expect it to be pretty miserable. If I judged musicals by the actual merit of the production of it I saw, The Sound of Music would be the worst musical ever written. (I've only seen a few crappy regional productions, fortunately I have the movie to prove its brilliance)
Okay, you first said you loved it, but now don't because you saw a bad understudy. That is not overrated. That is just not enjoying a performer.

True. Maybe because of that beautiful performance, I had such high expectations.
Where was this production?

Why does it matter?
Because I'm curious who the cast was.
Jordan - good question. I also want to know where this production was. The only regional production I've seen anywhere on the internet is in Dayton, Ohio later this fall. So - either it was very small scale, or well, the production never existed.
Kind of what I'm thinking as well. Would love to be proved wrong.

When I came down to New York after the tourists left in February 2010 I saw the production in Brooklyn at The Gallery Players.

You saw it twice on the same trip?
Also- that's not recently, that is over a year ago.
From your original post: "because I saw it recently."
Now...you want us to think it was almost a year and a half ago? And you saw it twice? Ok, I'm calling bull****.
That was a year and a half ago. I thought you said you saw it recently. You also said you saw a local production and in another thread you said you lived out of the country.

True it isn't recent but Teisha Duncan was so good I saw it twice. Nothing else in New York was new or good.

I live in Toronto. Not a far trip. Local meaning community production. This isn't small scale but it was small enough.

What dates did you see her understudy? Just curious so I can double check with my friend over there.
An about your claim you saw a local production...?

I thought you saw an understudy for Caroline the second time? Please get your story straight.
I'm guessing SPF is doing some frantic googling right now.

LOL. I also find it unlikely (though I won't make a bold declaration because I don't know) that Teisha had an understudy go on during a three week limited engagement. It's not unheard of, just seems unlikely. Plus, there are no understudies listed on the cast list.
