It could be something as simple as the designer and Clark not thinking that neckline looked as good with Clark's girlish bob.
As for Collins, I remember her hair looking much more platinum in the actual show. Maybe it was just the shock of seeing her done up so glamorously after wandering around in the frumpy pink sweater-set all evening. (I still say wearing that outfit was heroic on Collins' part--and perfect for the character.)
But Victoria changed to a longer wig (which I also didn't like) so it could t have been that.
The dress is just unflattering, IMO.

You're right SingOutLouise2 it wasn't "Losing My Mind" but "I'm Still Here" which got an incredibly long applause afterwards. Instead I'll just hope that she might sing "Losing My Mind" for this show as I'd love to hear her intepretation of the song.
I went again tonight and Losing my mind's Keys WERE LOWERED! It sounded so so so much better! Clark was an absolute wreck in the final scene which I worked wonderfully!
Oh that's really good. Is it at the Encores! (original?) key now?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Pulled from Wicked Fanatic's post "The dresses did change from the 1st preview. The green was gone and definitely blue now. Even Danny Burstein changed his lines from green to blue when asking guests if they had seen his wife when describing the dress she was wearing."
The style of dress is the same, but the color has changed from blue green to blue. And Danny did say "blue green dress" and now says "blue dress". It's not the lighting. The color of the dress has changed.
Ah, I can finally comment on this thread and say: Yes! I am seeing Follies in LA tonight!!!!!!
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
gcal - I'd be surprised if we didn't see another block of Follies tickets up on GoldStar soon. And there's always day of show $20 tickets sold at the box office if that's an option for you.
Is the final scene still as somber as it was on Broadway with Bernadette? I would always feel so drained by the end. Does Clark cry as much as Bernadette? Does Danny still put his arm out for Sally when they walk off together, and takes it away quickly, because Sally is completely oblivious to his presence? That's how it played with Bernadette, though it was even chillier in DC, with her walking off without Buddy, leaving him to follow her out.
Saw the show once again last evening. Just thrilling. There has never been a "Too Many Mornings" sung as brilliantly as Ron Raines and Victoria Clark. And... Jan Maxwell ..... Give her that TONY.

Yes, that was still the staging on May 8. I don't know if Sally is oblivious to his presence so much as Buddy is still walking on eggshells and afraid to upset her. I love that the production avoids the illusion (folly) that some magical transformation has solved all of anybody's problems.
I didn't see it in New York so I can't compare.

I agree with Brian about "Too Many Mornings." I've never heard a rendition that compares. For a few minutes at the end of Act I, FOLLIES comes very close to the feel of grand opera. (And then wisely backs off.)

My brother grabbed some balcony seats for Friday night, so I drove down from San Francisco to see the show.
I had seen it in NY in January, and enjoyed it. But I was not blown away-- I thought "In Buddy's Eyes" was Bernadette's best work in the show, and everything else she did left me wanting more.
I was floored by Victoria Clark. She is more like the Sally I imagined. I could see why Buddy stayed with her Sally-- those moments where she had a "twinkle in her eye"... I saw a woman deteriorate throughout the night. The contrast between her entrance and exit... a really incredible performance.
Oooh I agree that this production should be filmed! I think the only officially filmed version of FOLLIES is the concert version starring Lee Remick as Phyllis, no?
