Posted: 6/5/05 at 11:46pmJust because some found Applegate's performance less than stellar doesn't mean those that did do not support theatre. "Theatre" does not hinge on any one performer or show. Stop trying to use that tired old argument. It just won't work. And it's MISS BITCH to you. I earned my stripes.

She looked cute and her dancing was fine, if undemanding. But her singing...uh...yeah. I might still see Charity, but it isn't high on my to-do list.
Her entrance, though, was priceless. It was obviously a double who did the falling, but it was very well-done.

Posted: 6/6/05 at 12:39amAnyone who criticizes Ms. Applegate's performance on the a Tony Awards broadcast, performing live on TV for millions of people for the first time, shold take a look at last year's performances by Idina "Gasping for breath" Menzel and Tonya "screeching instead of singing" Pinkins - two performers who are supposedly seasoned Broadway veterans.

Posted: 6/6/05 at 8:23amApplegate on TV was no different from Applegate on stage in Chicago. She is a mildly talented dancer (Dolly Dinkle School recital level) and a less talented singer. She does not have the talent required of a Broadway musical star.

It doesn't matter - she's selling tickets.

Posted: 6/6/05 at 8:38amShe looked great, and no, that wasn't her falling into the pit.

I don't know, I wasn't all that impressed, but I wasn't all that horrified by it. I kind of saw it coming. I know she's not a singer and a dancer. I know she's in this because of her charm and because she can sell tickets and get a show that should have closed to open on Broadway. To compare that to last year's performances, I'm sorry, is insane. Also, for someone to be performing in front of millions of people, blah, blah, blah...Sara Ramirez, correct me if I'm wrong, hasn't been on TV for millions either, right? She didn't seem to have any problem kicking some serious a$$. Christina is used to things like that, I don't think nerves had anything to do with it...that's just the level of her ability. I'll still see the show, but long after I see "The Light in the Piazza" and "Spamalot."

Posted: 6/6/05 at 9:14amShe surprised me, better than I expected and she looked so feminine. The fandango girls were doing recycled choreography from The Life anyone else recognise it?

Posted: 6/6/05 at 9:17amSince I started this, I'll finish it. I am amazed at the number of posters on this site who obviously feel that if a performer is on Broadway then that means they are automatically above criticism. I can not imagine anyone of reasonable intlligence finding anything to enjoy about Applegate's amateur performance. To all those who say you can not judge it by the performance on the Tony Awards, I say don't put it on the Tony Awards. The Tonys are supposed to sell tickets. With the exception of Bee and maybe Piazza, it had the opposite affect on me.

Posted: 6/6/05 at 9:21amJohn Lithgow would have given a better performance as Charity.
#39re: Applegate Fans Beware
Posted: 6/6/05 at 9:27amI think even Lithgow would have had trouble getting past that overly busy, characterless choreography.

Posted: 6/6/05 at 9:33amI liked her (saw her first night on Broadway). And she's selling tickets. Isn't that enough???

I saw the show-and I was just as unimpressed. I will say, that last night, her dancing seemed to be a little better-she still wasn't hitting her accents or her turns the way she should've been-esp. during her solo. The turns I'll let go of because of the foot, but because of that, the accents were the only things she could punch and she didn't.
What's so painful about watching her is that there are at least 50 people who could've played the hell out of Charity, and most of them were sitting in the BALCONY last night. This is why B'way is in such a sorry state now, and it's become a bit of a joke. I don't know-I hear they're developing a live version of Pro Tools, maybe she'll be better then. In the mean time, maybe they can put two mics on her so we can hear her.

Nobody said anything like that. I also thought Christina's performance was not too good, but I do suspect the musical director was partly to blame (Hugh and Jesse had problems as well). Christina performed better when I saw the show, though I know that doesn't count for much now. She handed out the ammo for the joyfully bitter who are no doubt brimming with glee at the opportunity to bitch for months to come. Whatever. It's a live awards show. Imperfections happen on the Oscars, Grammys and Emmys as well. Christina probably has a hell of a lot more money than any of us, so why should she care what we think? She'll get work.

I like Applegate.
It is regrettable that so many young people will remember her interpretation of Charity.

Posted: 6/6/05 at 10:03amMister Matt, you are totally wrong. I have read several posts from people defending indefensable performances for the mere fact they are on B'way. I even read one that said we should celebrate all of B'way even the mediocre. I refuse to celebrate third rate at a C-note a seat.

Posted: 6/6/05 at 10:16amThere seems to be a problem with where the orchestra is situated (at the rear) for a lot of performers. Nobody has commented on that clinker of a note that was hit at the end of Razzle Dazzle by Jesse L. Martin (who is he anyway?).

Theatreboi11...you don't get to be on Broadway for just heart and spirit. You have to actually have talent and Apppegate does not.
Then again, Broadway sells out so much these days, I guess talent doesn't matter. As long as you have a name then that's all you need.

I was very happy with Christina's performance.
It allowed me to cross Sweet Charity off my list of things to see.
