We saw Hairspray and Movin Out in Tampa last year and we loved it. I wish I could just see all the shows! I loved Piazza's Tony-award performance, and I would love to see it, but I think a lot of the dancers in the group would like an energizing show. Do you think we would like Chicago?

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is good too, but dude, go to Avenue Q. Really. I went last year with school, and there were freshmen, and if you don't mind about 30 seconds of puppet sex, you'll love it.

I definitely would love to see Avenue Q. Of the 2004 Tony Award Performances, Avenue Q was my favorite!

Chicago is a great dance musical. But it basically has no set, and there are no big costumes. Some teens don't like that.

Both Rent and Chicago - I would only recommend for ages 13 and up.

I would love to see Chicago also, because that is one of my favorite movies, and one of the groups from our studio recently performed a dance to Cell Block Tango which was awesome.

Also Sweet Charity is a fun, bubbly dance oriented musical for all ages.

Our teacher gave us two options for when we go to NYC.

1) We can either see 2 or 3 shows, with prime seats up close.

or

2) We could 4 or 5 shows with higher or obstructed view seats.

The voting was almost a perfect tie. I voted for option # 2. Do you think that is the better choice?

yes--most bad seats aren't that bad and there may even be the chance to move (but only after intermission or with permission)

Piazza is energizing in its own way. sure there are no dance numbers, but its still a beautiful show. its actually very funny yet heartbreakingly moving at the same time. bt if you want a really fun show with a lot of dancing, i say mamma mia! its a great show.

How is it tied? I'd rather see twice as many shows than have "good" seats, and I'm such an orchestra snob.

Most of the people in my class have seen Mamma Mia and loved it, but my dance teacher hates it with her life! So I guess that is out of the question, unless she changes her min, which I doubt will happen. So four shows I am at right now are: RENT, Chicago, Avenue Q, and Piazza.

And I 100% agree with you skittles about the twice as many shows in higher seats. Many of the kids are snobs who are subscirbers to TBPAC who have to have to be close. I dont think they realize the TBPAC is twice as big as any broadway theatre. Updated On: 9/25/05 at 04:24 PM

Rent was...a little bit iffy. I saw it with my mom which was...not great. She hated it, so I was uncomfortable watching it with her...but I loved it.

Chicago is VERY...mature. I sat front row (absolutely amazing) and...it's a little weird seeing a girl wearing fisnet pants with nothing but a thong on underneath. It's alright though. It's an INCREDIBLY high-energy show. THE most energy I've ever seen on a stage before--I'd say go for it. It's not much like the movie...there is almost no set, and no costumes. The main focus is on the actors. NOTHING but talent in that show. It was a VERY pleasant surprise when I saw it. I'd give anything to see it again.

Sweet Charity--last minute decision. It was a great show. I was not a big fan of the first...20 minutes or so, but after that--it got great. I loved it, another show I'd give anything to see again.

Avenue Q--Saw it twice on my last trip (once with lottery). It's very funny, great for teens. Not much dancing, but it has great music. It's one of my favorites.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels--cannot get over how great this show is! The ensemble is AMAZING! There are a few GREAT dance numbers. There is one girl in the ensemble who has the best facial expressions when she dances. Ah. It's a BRILLIANT show. The whole cast is amazing. The sets aren't used to wow the audience (like in...some other shows because the enesemble can't do it themselves *cough*). I'd reccomend this show out of all of them.

The 2 shows I'd reccomend:
-Chicago
-Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

I saw it at 12 although I was mature for my age. Personally, I thin k you would be fine but it is your parents choice.

In Chicago, do the performers wear the same costume for the whole show?

Yes. And also, I saw Chicago at 11 and Rent at 12, so I think you'll really like it.

DRS was a great one to see. I highly recommend that along with Avenue Q. Piazza was a great performance, as well but definetly see DRS and Avenue Q.

Kristin Chenoweth could barely control a Great Dane she trotted onto the stage. "Great, they gave me a dog that weighs five times what I do", she quipped. For the record, she weighs 93 pounds, and has a Maltese.

I've read on several sites that Avenue Q is not appropriate for any kids under college. Once again, is this just another time when it depends on how mature you are and what you can handle?

Not appropriate for under college? Pshaw! *has fun using that word*

I think you may be misinterpreting what those sites are saying, or the people running those sites really have no idea to what the average teenager is exposed to.

Avenue Q is specifically geared toward kids who have just gotten out of college. It is the story of a college graduate. It has humor that younger people, like college students, are more able to appreciate. That being said, high schoolers can completely enjoy it too (and without being scarred for life, I might add).

I definately wouldn't take someone under 13 to it, but I know lots of 14 and 15 year olds who absolutely adore it (myself included). It is somewhat how mature you are and what you can handle. I personally think it has a lot to do with what you've been exposed to and how easily you get offended. "The Internet is for Porn", "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist", and "You Can Be As Loud As the Hell You Want (When You're Makin' Love)" are examples of song titles. Despite the fact that it has vulgar language and sex (some puppet boobs), it is a show with a lot of heart too. It leaves me all warm and fuzzy inside. re: Appropriate Age For RENT? Go see it.

P.S. I would take a mature 12-year-old to RENT, you should be able to handle that one fine. Three friends and I saw it at age 14.

For dancers, I recommend Hairspray. It has some great dancing and nothing objectionable in terms of content. I think Piazza would also be a good choice because it's just such a beautiful show in many ways (music, costumes, set). If you're seeing Rent and maybe Chicago, you need a little conventional beauty in there somewhere.

Thanks loudasthehelliwant. Yeh, I don't get easily offended and I will laugh at almost anything, so I think I would enjoy Avenue Q. As for Rent, It sounds like I should definitely be able to see it. Piazza also sounds wonderful. I've seen Hairspray and so have a couple of other kids in our class, but that is one of my favorite shows so I would definitely go back and see it again

Definitely go see Piazza!

I saw Rent when I was 12...a little young, but I was fine with it. The surprising part was that my parents let me go see it alone and they picked me up outside the Nederlander afterwards.

A lot of my 7th and 8th grade students have seen it with their parents and loved it. Of course, they all became drug addicts soon after, but other than that....

Honestly, these are good kids, and their parents knew that and trusted them, and they were fine. I'm not sure they UNDERSTOOD everything, but they definitely enjoyed it!
