zone, again tone down on the nasty posts. Did I make a nasty comment towards you, I was again posting my opinion. I think that with The Last 5 Years, everyone can relate - even people who don't like broadway at all. Compared to maybe a Taboo type of show....that is all I was saying.
Please don't get so nasty with me, it's very rude and uncalled for. Please accept my opinion and move on -

I'm not gonna apologize for what I said, cause i firmly stand behind my beliefe that your statement was beyond asanine.
I will however apologize for the tone because i haven't slept in going on 24 hours and probably won't get to sleep (save for maybe a 4 hour nap this evening) for another 24 hours and So I'm a little unbalanced.
Well glad that is settled!
I'm a straight male. I also get asked if I'm gay after people ask me what my hobbies are or what type of interests I have. I respond with a huge speech about stereotypes.

Renthead2, I have to agree that your statement was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on BWW, and that's saying something! Why on earth would it depend on which show we're talking about? That makes absolutely no sense at all. I have gay AND straight friends who like all kinds of theatre, and there's no correlation between their sexual orientation and the shows they like or dislike. It's a personal preference for everyone. You might want to rethink that silly claim of yours.
There are lots of straight guys who love theatre, and who are actors. I think what surprises people is that the percentage of gay guys who are into theatre is larger than the percentage in the general population. It's definitely higher and, personally, I think it's great.

Exactly.
It's like saying that Bareback mountain was about as gagy a movie as you can get (and while that might be true) that doesn't mean that Gay people are gonna like it (i know a lot who didn't, me being one of them) and it CERTAINLY doesn't mean straight people won't like it (cause they ate that **** up).

The new version of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR was very unique. Glenn Carter's singing makes him seem gay, but I think he's straight. I have put a picture of JUDAS on my message! Also, I put a picture of GLENN CARTER who portrayed Jesus in the film.

The sad fact is, the Gay World invites everyone to the party and the parades. The straight world says "get out of here, fags."
Who do you really want to run the river with?
This thread is...interesting.
Okay, I'll give it to you straight (no pun intended). From my experience, about half of all male musical theater actors are gay. You want a statistic? That's it. Or maybe 60%. But it depends...on whether the cast is say, "Sweeney Todd" as opposed to...I don't know..."42nd Street."
Interestingly though, when it comes to "straight" plays, the majority of the male actors tend to be, well, straight.
But God loves all of his sons equally, even those who love each other.
Oh, I'm so clever.
I know gay men that wont go near Broadway cause it's way too gay. It's all cultural my friends...
Aside from writing and directing at the school I teach at, (and that I was a theater major in college - focusing on the academic side of theater), I'm not involved in the community other than as an audience member and avid collector. I like shows of any kind from "straight" shows like TL5 (did I just acknowledge that?) to "gay" shows like Falsettos.
I'm 100% straight.
I don't understand the stereotype at all. The board seems to cover the whole range of sexuality - what I think is unique about it is that everyone - straight, gay, bi - whatever - is accepted here. If anything, we straight people get the brunt of the teasing on this board since God knows it can't go the other way.

Honey, it was more than just Glenn Carter's singing.
There were serious (I'm guessing) Intentional homoerotic under...not, they weren't really undertones, they were just tones. there were homoerotic tones.
Why do i care about this? Because everytime a straight man says he likes Broadway, most people will start making fun of them.
People don't make fun, they're surprised. And logically, if people are so surprised, doesn't that in itself answer your question? If people are surprised, then yes, a straight male fan is in the minority.
luvtheemcee - once again your ignorance shines through. People DO make fun - and until they get to know you, don't actually believe that ANY man is straight if they like musicals. Generally people are more civilized than to make jokes about it, but the assumption is ABSOLUTELY there -- and my friends, who all know I'm straight and love theater - make jokes about it all the time (in much the same way we tease another 30 year old friend about his obsession with comic books and pez dispensers)
While I too think it's pretty ridiculous to make generalizations about shows and sexual preference, I also think that some musicals ARE in fact gayer than other musicals, and do in fact appeal more to a straight audience. Case in point: I have a couple straight male friends who don't generally seek out Broadway musicals. And yet they were both interested and excited to see Spamalot. We all went together and had a great time. I invited these same friends to see the La Cage revival, and they had no interest. They weren't ooged out by the idea, or afraid that people would think they were gay, they simply weren't interested in seeing that show. We all DID go see Wedding Singer (which we all hated) but I had to bring my niece to see Drowsy Chaperone because the boys didn't want to come. So, whatever all that means, there's some anecdotal evidence of something - though I'm not exactly sure of what.

I just don't get it.
Broadway = hot girls in tight clothes shaking and dancing.
Sports = buff men in tight uniforms shaking and bending.
You tell me which one is gay.

Bsobw2- that was great!
Tricky Joe is right in that, just like anything, different shows appeal to different people and jason, I don't know any friends who actually make fun of guys who like musicals who say they're straight- though I'm not saying your friends don't. Like Em said, I find people to be surprised.
Is it making fun when people go "oh my God, a straight man!!"? No. It's the straight men being oversensitive and insecure, if they respond to that as being made fun of. If I wasn't clear, I was referring to what goes on in the message board community; I certainly see much more shock and surprise than I do teasing on this message board .
You don't understand the stereotype? Are you aware that stereotypes come from truth? While the fact is that straight men CAN be musical theater fans, the fact is also that the majority of male musical theater fans (and professionals) are not heterosexual.
God, I'm so ignorant, because I disagreed with you! So much easier to label ignorance than to accept that the WORLD does not agree with you, oh wise teacher. But that's okay, you can, now that I've disagreed with you on your huge issue, make every single thing you post a personal attack on me, rather than a disagreement with my opinion. Y'all can start a club.

<---firmly denies the existance of straight men
Everyone's a little bisexual.....
(That's a JOKE, for all of you who need everything spelled out for you.)
For the record - it's not making fun of so much as teasing - that's what friends do anyway. And if you get over-sensitive about it, well, then yeah, you're going to take it to seriously. I know we're all just kidding with my friends. But I can't tell you how many people I've met (including on this board) who assume that because I love theater that I'm gay.

So, jason, they're Surprised your straight? Whereas your friends are the ones that may tease you?
-I'm making sure I understand your post, not trying to argue it-

yeah, cause who doesn't wanna **** a guy with bad hair who comes across on stage and on the screen as someone with less personality than tumor.
