My firends joke around - it's all good natured - like we tease the guy who likes the comic books and pez -- or the way we tease the guy who's VERY into golf.
People who I DON'T know (men and women) usually make the assumption that because I like theater that I'm gay. Before they hear that, they would never think it - as far as I know, I don't have any of the "stereotypical" gay traits that people who don't know what they're talking about associate with gay people

Posted: 8/2/06 at 11:15amBroadway isn't necessarily gay. I, myself, am a straight man. Although, when I saw Wicked two years ago, I found myself yelling out, "I love you, George!" to Mr. Hearn when he took his bow. However, I meant I love him as a performer.

I'm glad this question was brought up. I am completely straight but love Broadway musicals (well, the good ones). I know that may sound strange but I think it goes back to liking pop songs when I was a kid. There is a sort of a connection to Broadway songs. But the stereotype does hang there, if you like musicals, you're gay. So far, I haven't had to say, "I'd like a ticket on the aisle. And I'm not gay."
A long time ago, I did a few amateur musicals but I have the four signs of being straight: couldn't sing, couldn't dance, couldn't act...and had the hots for the entire female chorus.
lol, and being straight, there have been times in reading the posts on the board that are so incredibly gay, that I want to write, "Come on, butch it up a little, please." LOL. And here is another indication of a guy who is straight. He looks over his shoulder before even going into this thread because he is afraid someone will think he is gay. LOL.

Posted: 8/2/06 at 12:06pmWell, I'd say most of the people that posted ARE gay indeed. But there were about 2 straight people? So I guess gay men are the majority around here?
#56re: Is Broadway Gay???
Posted: 8/2/06 at 12:12pmThey are definitely the majority - though I do know of several more than two of us on here who aren't. I also highly doubt that any of the straight guys who DO go on BWW would be afraid to come into this thread and post.

I'm straight and I love musical theatre. My friends all know it and they understand and respect that. The only people who ever mocked me for it were these stupid morons in one of my classes last year(I made one video showcasing my love of theatre and sometimes wore shirts from my favorite shows) and this person I know who referred to me as the "Broadway F**"(I wish not to spell the word completely out cause I don't want to offend anyone).
I mean with the way things are nowadays there seems to be something for everyone, regardless of orientation, sex, race, etc.

Posted: 8/2/06 at 1:20pmDoes it really matter as to wheather broadway is gay or not its broadway a place where people go to enjoy the theater. However just to add a small side note both my father and stepfather enjoy broadway very much so in fact my father makes me buy all his tickets for him we go twice a year as a family and it was his idea to start this (plus hes very straight) my step-dad took my mom to see rent on their first date and hes straight too (i shoud hope so). To all the straight men on the board good for you for liking broadway because there are a lot of girls that wish their boyfirends would take them to see a show me included. (stupid boy can't get a clue) Ok so this was a large side note!!

It doesn't matter, but that is not my point...i just want to know if the stereotype really had anything to fall back on.

I don't think the subject line really describes what the thread is about.
Broadway in itself cannot be gay.
People who perform ON Broadway can be.

Here's an interesting older thread that's sort of along these lines. I'm not posting it to cry out "double post," I'm posting it because I thought it had a pretty good discussion going on in it for a while.

Posted: 8/2/06 at 1:43pmAt first it sort of got on my nerves that everyone just assumes you're gay, but then I get over because I can't imagine myself enjoying anything else. This is what I want to do with my life and I'm prepared to take all the stereotypes that come with it. There are gay/straight people in everything, including sports. I mean, yes, musical theater is very frilly with shows like Hairspray and La Cage Aux Follies, but then there are shows like Phantom and Les Miz which are very masculine type shows. It's strange, but my brother (who is a big fraternity type guy at a very big southern school) loves Phantom and is really interested in seeing Wicked. I think it just takes people a little while to sort of open up to the idea of musical theater. I have a lot of straight male friends who always ask me "when are you going to do another musical so I can come see it?" I thought that was kind of cool.

Well there is a large community of anti-christian, anti-family values artists(for lack of a better word) working in the theatre today. Their agenda is to promote homosexuality and they are succeeding. I pray it stops. I ask others to pray too.

There is definitely a higher percentage of gay men in theatre. So what? They just happen to like it, like I (a straight woman) happen to like it. And if you're a straight guy and people you don't know call you gay for liking theatre... again, so what? Who cares what they think? It's definitely an advantage for a straight guy (like the above poster said, or maybe he was in the otther thread, I really don't remember, I just woke up) to be in close proximity with lots of women and gay men.
I guess as you get older you realize it just doesn't matter what "people" say. I wouldn't even waste my time with "speeches" or any of that. If others are going to giggle "omg ur ghey!!!" then obviously it's THEIR hangup. They're the ones not having amazing amounts of fun being in and seeing shows.

I started a thread on this topic a while ago. I got a bit over the top at times, though.
The Official 'I'm not gay, I just like musicals' thread.
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

It's sad that people succumb to such stereotypes. Rather shallow actually, given that the world is so diverse.
P.S. You should have seen Madonna in Miami. She rocked Phoenix in June!
#74re: Is Broadway Gay???
Posted: 8/2/06 at 3:37pmBelieve me, I could care less if people make that assumption. I will tell them I'm straight - and some may choose not to believe me - but I feel that says way more about them than it does about me. (For example, those people who think that think there's something wrong with being gay -- I don't think there's anything wrong with it - it's not who I am, but I'm not black or a woman either).
