This year there are 9 people who received two Tony nominations (two of which received three). That seems like an awfully large amount of double nominees. Is that standard or unique to this year?

They are:

Bill T. Jones - Best Director (Fela), Best Choreographer (Fela), Best Book (Fela)
Adam Cork - Best Original Score (Enron), Best Sound Design (Enron), Best Sound Design (Red)
Joe DiPietro - Best Book (Memphis), Best Score (Memphis)
Sherie Rene Scott - Best Actress (Everyday Rapture), Best Book (Everyday Rapture)
Jan Maxwell - Best Actress in a Leading Role (The Royal Family), Best Featured Actress (Lend Me a Tenor)
David Bryan - Best Score (Memphis), Best Orchestrations (Memphis)
Neil Austin - Best Lighting Design (Hamlet), Best Lighting Design (Red)
Marina Draghici - Best Costumes (Fela), Best Scenic Design (Fela)
Dan Moses Schreier - Best Sound Design (A Little Night Music), Best Sound Design (Sondheim on Sondheim)

Wow, good point. I cannot remember the last time we had this many.

FYI: Sherie Rene Scott got her nominations for EVERYDAY RAPTURE, not MEMPHIS.

That is what happens when you carelessly copy and paste.

Off the top of my head, I can think of 8 people who doubled up last year:

Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal Book and Score)
Tom Kitt (Next to Normal Orchestrations and Score)
Lee Hall (Billy Elliot Book and Score)
David Lindsay-Abaire (Shrek Book and Score)
Matthew Warchus (Direction for God of Carnage and Norman Conquests)
Paul Arditti (Sound for Mary Stuart and Billy Elliot)
Kevin Adams (Lighting for Hair and Next to Normal)
Dale Ferguson (Set and Costumes for Exit the King)

It's totally possible I am missing one. But I don't think it' uncommon for many designers to double up.

Having some double nominees in itself isn't that unusual, as bjh pointed out. Designers often get more than one nom, and some elements of a show often have overlap in personnel such as Score/Orchestrations, Book/Score, or Set/Costumes.

What is fairly unusual this year is to have 2 people each have 3 nominations, and for 3 people (Adam Cork, Dan Moses Schreier, and Neil Austin) to be competing against themselves. Last year, Matthew Warchus was the only person to compete against himself.

ETA: Whoops, bjh is right and 2 people competed against themselves last year, not just one.

Nope, Kevin Adams competed against himself for lighting. But he lost both, so it's ok. :-P

I think the only unusual double nominee is Jan Maxwell and MAYBE Sherie Rene Scott. Just the opportunity to do two well-received shows in the same awards season is unusual, let alone be nominated for a Tony for your performance in both of them.

The feat Jan Maxwell pulled of is no easy task. Brava! Hopefully she will win at least one of those!

And starring in a show that you wrote and being eligible, let alone being nominated, for both performance and writing is also very unusual. It has been done, but it's not very common. I'm lookin' at you, Harvey and Bob.

Stew did it two years ago. But that was certainly an exception and not the rule.

I agree about Jan. Not many people are nominated in two performance categories in the same year. Good for her!

A couple of seasons ago, Phylicia Rashad had the honor (?) of appearing in 2 different shows in the same season, both of which got shut out at the Tonys. Cymbeline and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof both got no nominations (although I personally thought that both shows were decent).

Yikes. I thought that both Cymbeline and Cat were terrible! Phylicia was fine in Cat, but she was god awful in Cymbeline. That was the review where the critic (I think Brantley) said that she invented new consonants not known to man. Lol.

Double acting nominations is indeed pretty rare, and so far it's only happened to women, usually in plays. The other double-nominated ladies are:

Amanda Plummer in 1982 - Best Actress in a Play (A Taste of Honey) and Best Featured Actress in a Play (Agnes of God). She won Featured Actress.

Dana Ivey in 1984 - Best Featured Actress in a Play (Heartbreak House) and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Sunday in the Park with George). She lost both.

Kate Burton in 2002 - Best Actress in a Play (Hedda Gabler) and Best Featured Actress in a Play (The Elephant Man). She also lost both.

That's right, forgot about Stew. I guess he was nominated in four different categories for the same show that year, which is not easy to come by. Four's a lot! (I think he won for the wrong category [should have won Orchestrations, Xanadu should have won Book], but o well.)

Also, just to recount this year, there should be 10, not 9. Santo Loquasto was nominated for his Fences scenic design and was RE-nominated for his Ragtime costumes.
