Hi, i am a senior in high school and am auditioning for the title role in Mary Poppins for my school play. Any suggestions for an audition song?? I'm thinking "Lonely Goatherd" from Sound of Music, or "Before the Parade Passes By" from Hello, Dolly!.
No...that's way to predictable.
Change it up a bit.
I would do Beyonce's "Partition".
really show them your range.
I suggest "The Oldest Profession" from THE LIFE or "Madrid" from WOMEN ON THE VERGE...

"Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" is always a favorite, and it has that special Julie Andrews feeling to it.

I wouldn't recommend a pop song. Usually directors want musical theatre songs, but that's just my experience.
"Pure Imagination" WILLY WONKA
"Never, Neverland" PETER PAN
"Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?" THE KING AND I
"Saga of Jenny" LADY IN THE DARK
"I'll Buy You a Star" A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN
"The Second Star to the Right" PETER PAN (Disney movie)
"No One is Alone" INTO THE WOODS
Two different threads on the same topic from two different posters. I'm seeing a lot of regional Mary Poppins popping up!
^S. Skywalker posted that she's auditioning for a production at her high school.
These are SO right on.

Here are some starting places. Looks for shows that Julie Andrews has performed in the past. Those songs will be of similar style and vocal range many times. These include: My Fair Lady, Cinderella and Camelot. Lots of great soprano songs to work from there. Mary's songs definitely show a lot of range in Mary Poppins.
Also think about other movies that the Sherman brothers composed songs for: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Jungle Book. They might not all be "traditional" female songs but they reflect a similar writing style. Hush-a-bye mountain from Chitty Chitty is lovely..and Mary sings a similar song or Doll on a Box. The Bare Necessities from Jungle Book, The Age of Not Believing from Bedknobs.
If you don't know these songs, you can listen on iTunes and get the sheet music (where you can easily adjust the key) on musicnotes.com.
