Often, especially on such a vocally demanding show, stars will call out on recording days to preserve their voices so that they sound as close to flawless as possible on the CD.

Posted: 3/14/12 at 12:51pmSomeone on that other theatre board says she has a sinus infection. I wonder which is true. If she has an infection, I assume the recording would have been postponed. If the recording went on as scheduled, she's probably fine.

I hadn't heard that, but that's possible too, and even more reason to preserve her voice for the recording.
A cast recording can't simply be postponed. It costs a lot of money to reserve a studio, hire everyone, and make sure your cast and musicians can be there. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think they could postpone it just because Audra is sick.

I wonder if it's just cheaper to record everything else during the scheduled session and then add a better-voiced Audra later.
My guess is this is what happened--she tweeted on Sunday that she was in hair and makeup on Sunday when she realized her sinus infection had affected her voice so she sat out of the performance. Since the recording is supposedly being done now, she was also out yesterday to continue resting her voice.
Let's hope she's back in tonight.

She can always pull an Elaine Stritch and lay down her tracks after the rest of the tracks have been laid down (ditto Karen Morrow on THE GRASS HARP). The music in this production is so mashed-up and trashed-up anyway, it really wouldn't matter.
In any case, it's been done before. Adele Addison used to talk about dubbing the film of PORGY AND BESS- sitting in an empty studio with Andre Previn singing to Robert McFerrin's disembodied pre-recorded vocals and the tracks of an orchestra that had been disbanded months before. It didn't hurt the soundtrack album any.

Not necessarily stars, but I know the Godspell girls took performances off the weekend before recording their album. They did have a pretty rough schedule: a five-show weekend into an entire day in the recording studio.
I hope Audra recovers quickly!
