I remember I stage doored Matilda after a Wednesday matinee. The theater was full of school trips, but luckily the kids were pretty quiet and well-behaved during the show. At the stage was just these two other women (who you could tell were huge theatre fans), myself, and my parents. A few people come out of the stage door, like Lesli Margherita. Suddenly, 20+ rowdy 4th graders come running over, begging for the man who played Mr. Wormwood's autograph, screaming, swinging on the barriers, and just being overall annoyances. Meanwhile, the chaperones just chat 20ft away from the kids and are definitely not going to intervene. Finally, when I told one of the kids that the girl who played Matilda doesn't come out the stage door (which she doesn't), they all whined and went back to wait for their bus. IT was so awkward being a college student surrounded by screaming elementary brats.
after seeing HAIRSPRAY...I and a friend waited at the stage door to get autographs and when HARVEY FIERSTEIN walked by and signed my program I mentioned to him I loved him in the movie, INDEPENDENCE DAY...lol...he actually looked startled and thanked me while moving to the next person...I did that on purpose...teehee!
I had sort of an awkward encounter w/NPH. My friends and I weren’t planning on stage-dooring last month, but when we saw the line was right outside the entrance and there weren’t a ton of people (maybe 20 or so), we decided to wait. My friends ended up having to leave before Lena/NPH came out, but I stayed and got lucky—I had originally been waiting by the side of the barricade and expected to be told to move away, but they extended the barricade and I wound up in the front row. For whatever reason, I wanted to say something to NPH besides “you were amazing,” (although I’m fairly certain I said that, too). And I didn’t want to bring up HIMYM. As he was signing I noticed that his nails were bright blue with gold sparkles, so I was going to compliment him on them – which would have been perfect, but the girl 2 people away from me had the same idea, so while he was excited about her comment, I felt silly saying it too. But, by that point I was too out of it to come up with something else (had been a very tough week personally, and it was late) so I said it anyway…twice, since he didn’t hear the first time. =/ I then complimented him on his great performance and he said thanks both times, but I feel like – I met NPH and that is what I said? Also, as he was signing my program he made a funny comment (there was a lady screaming ‘por favor’ across the street to him) and I missed the opportunity to say something witty back. Oh well, at the end of the day it’s not like he would remember if I had said something substantial, and it wasn’t bad, I just felt it was a dumb move on my part.
