Forgive me if this is on a thread somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I haven't heard anything about this one until seeing this Critic's Pick from Jesse Green, and now it's a candidate (along with Babe, The Blood Quilt, and a possible return visit to Suffs) for the last open slot on my trip next week. Has anybody seen it? https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/28/theater/bad-kreyol-review.html?unlocked_article_code=1.WU4.bGFQ.WjWcaQrIcOdZ&smid=url-share

there are some beautifully written passages here, but overall this didnt do much for me. i dont know if the problem is the American lead character as she was drawn, or whether it was the performance, but i found her insufferable from the jump, which sorta threw the whole thing off balance.

The fact that the other two main characters are so wonderfully written and so PERFECTLY performed actually hurts the piece, a bit. Jude Tibeau is fantastic, and I wanted more of his Peter. And Pascal Armand remains one of the best actresses in New York today, delivering yet another masterpiece performance of a complicated, strong woman. The script calls for conflict based on her character's personality, but shes so endearing and whipsmart, I just found myself nodding along with her every moment.

Still, glad I saw it, and Morrisseau of course has some interesting things to say, even if i found it all a bit muddled here. Lovely set, well directed.
