I had the most giddy fun at "Spamalot" the first time I saw it--the second time it seemed much less fizzy. "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," was a very good, old-fashioned book musical with some clever songs and engaging performances. "Spelling Bee," has been fading in my memory ever since I saw it--funny book, nice performances, but just OK songs. "Piazza," while it has its faults, by and large sustained a compelling emotional atmosphere through the melding of every aspect of its production (sets, costumes, lighting, direction, acting/singing, book, and music)--it had "that certain something" that has stayed with me. So I would have to give "Piazza" the prize, finally.
