Saw this last time I was in the city. I liked the show but didn't love it. I have the film soundtrack from back in the day. I can see why people loved it. I wish I felt the same. It was fine.

A friend of mine works at the theater and thinks it should have just been a ninety minute show based on their Carnegie hall concert or the recording sessions themselves. Instead, they build the show around Omara Portuondo, despite the fact she only appears in one track on the album.

I was just about to mention that this might be the first original Broadway cast album completely in Spanish, but they somehow included Juan de Marcos's narration in the finale. (Marco Ramirez's libretto is in English.)

Regardless, this is an amazing recording that is only matched by the energy onstage — and in the audience — if you happen to catch this live. Marco, Renesito, and these musicians are EN FUEGO, Isa and Ashley are stars, and I really hope Natalie Venetia Belcon takes home the featured actress in a musical Tony on Sunday. (I still hear a sliver of Gary Coleman in her vocal timbre, which brought a big smile to my face.)

Go see this one if you can, folks.
