Um, yeah, hi. I love the York casting department.
The Baker's Wife - MUFTI
Great cast...but I hope there are some other folks of color in the cast.
When we did Baker's Wife in college, our Genevieve was black...but there were no other faces of color on the stage. So, the villagers shock at Aimable and her together took on an unwanted racial tone that was never justified in our production.
That's a good point.
I'm SO excited to hear "Medowlark" in its original context.
And the rest of that score. Just delicious.
Even though I attended a particularly horrendous amateur production of the show, I stayed for the second act simply for the score. With the exception of maybe two songs, it is utterly sublime. For some reason, the song "Chanson" can reduce me to tears. I'm not exactly sure why. There is something about its simple melody that feels so familiar and nostalgic, even when hearing it for the first time.
And life is the sound of the sheep
And the taste of the stew
And the way that you look
When he touches you
Then your whole life is different
Then your whole life is new
You really need the rest of the song for those lyrics to make sense, but they are actually perfect. I get goosebumps every time I hear the melody alone.
Most everyone knows Meadowlark, but there are so many stunning gems including:
Gifts of Love
Proud Lady
Serenade
Endless Nights
Where Is the Warmth?
There are a couple of cutesy cheesy numbers that manage to rise above schmaltz to be heartwarming when staged well such as Merci, Madam or Plain and Simple. But the two songs for the villagers, Bread and Buzz-a-Buzz, just don't work.
I wish I could attend this production. I fell in love with Goldsberry in Two Gentlemen of Verona and would love to see her in this.
Wow. Excellent casting. Can't wait to see this on the 27th!

Great cast. I'm so glad I got tickets to this, especially since I missed the production at Papermill.
Can't wait to hear Ms. Goldsbury wrap her velvety voice around "Gifts of Love" and "Meadowlark". I'll be there on 10/27.
I'd love to see this on my birthday (the 27th), but I'm working all day. I'll try to do a belated present and see it the 28th :).
