Barbara Cook thinks Zeta-Jones should hand her Tony Back.

Posted: 9/11/10 at 1:51amI was waiting for this nonsense to show up here. Who really cares? Barbara Cook said she didn't like Catherine Zeta-Jones in ALNM. She didn't say she hates her. She didn't say she's a puppy murderer. She didn't even say Michael Douglas bought her the award. She said she didn't like her performance. Why is this such a big deal?

Posted: 9/11/10 at 1:51amI don't think Barbara should have even been nominated in her category, so "blah" to her

Posted: 9/11/10 at 2:00amIt's kind of a big deal, at least surprising to me, because it shows a lack of class to speak publicly against another actress. I mean, she's Barbara Cook, not Joan Rivers. It's just poor form if you ask me. Not nice. Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones-there's ALOT people could say about Cook but they have manners.

Yes, celebrities have a special responsibility in minding their actions and words since they are of particular influence to large groups of people. And yes, one should be respectful of one's colleagues.
I don't see where or how Barbara was tacky, classless, and rude. She did not comment on CZJ's abilities as an actress nor did she attack her personally. I'm sure Barb is a musical theatre fan like the rest of us and expressed an opinion from that point of view. I think it's tacky and classless to ascribe negative intentions and motives based on a comment that only reveals the fact she enjoyed another nominee's performance more than CZJ's. And if that's tacky and classless then...:S

Oh geez.
First off, actors say stupid things. People think that because they're pretty and famous they must have something intelligent to contribute, but nine times out of ten they don't and wind up looking foolish. Actors should generally stick to reading lines someone else wrote for them because when they go off book, it seldom goes well.
Second, old people say stupid things. I'm sure that if I'm lucky enough to still be kickin' it in my 80s that I am going to say stupid and offensive things on a daily basis. I hope people do me the courtesy of not reporting on it.
Third, if the person who originated the leads in The Music Man, Candide, and She Loves Me wants to bitch about a lead performance in a Broadway musical, she of all people has earned the right.
It amuses me when actors get slammed on message boards for saying things far tamer than what gets said all the time on message boards.

Posted: 9/11/10 at 10:40amI don't really care that she didn't like CZJ in the show. Oh well, big deal. She's entitled to her opinion...as I am mine. I take issue that she was even nominated in her category. For what? There was no acting. I don't think struggling to move around and waddle across the stage is considered acting.....in her case. Yawn

"She did not comment on CZJ's abilities as an actress nor did she attack her personally."
Well, she kinda did in a roundabout way. When Finneran won she went up to her and exclaimed, "Thank GOD you were good!" adding, "You don't want to lose to some schlump."
If memory serves, there was some debate whether Cook would be nominated in Lead or Featured. I guess she's implying that she was more relieved to have lost to FInneran than Zeta-Jones (not that she was necessarily overjoyed for Finneran's win) because Zeta-Jone's performance was dull in her opinion and it would've been a shame to lose to her. Hence the emphasis on "God" and her comment afterward.

Yes but we're a bunch of nobodies and not musical theatre royalty. You need to watch what you say if you want to work and be respected. She's probably not ware we live in the age of the internet and twitter and something she says in an intimate cabaret is going to be broadcast.

Posted: 9/11/10 at 12:33pmI wonder what Barbara Cook thinks of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Is there a Q & A portion at her show?

Just because you can say something doesn't mean you should say it, particularly when you're doing a concert and a gossip columnist is in the audience.
And if you don't understand the difference between posting something anonymously on a mesage board and saying it in front of an audience onstage, then this entire discussion is useless.

Thank you Jordan for your comment on page 1 of this thread regarding Menzel's Tony win. I totally agree. And betty, yes you can!
In reading the comments under the Musto article, I read this:
"I was there too and she said "Imagine being the person who should win and hear Catherine Zeta Jones announced the winner?"
Who did she mean by that? Montego Glover? Or just anyone but Catherine Z-J?"

Yes, and it is indeed Cook's cabaret. But what a dull and unnecessary choice of patter.

My favorite line in the interview - "You don't want to lose to some shlump."
She's priceless.

Posted: 9/11/10 at 4:30pmNo she was indirectly calling CZJ a schlump. She thanked GOD Finneran was good in her part, otherwise it would've been a disgrace to have lost to her, like if Cook had been put in Lead instead and lost to CZJ.

I was at a cabaret show of hers once after she entertained the at the White House during the Reagan era and she had some choice things to say about Ronnie and Nancy. Finally, Wally Harper started the vamp for the next song--VERY loudly--and she said, "I guess he's telling me to shut up and sing."
The audience loved it. She's such a "good girl" that it's fun to see her be naughty.
But really, it's CABARET. if a performer can't let her hair down at a cabaret show, you people are taking all the fun out of cabaret.
