A bit of discussion at ATC, I'm surprised it wasn't posted here. (Unless it was and I missed it).
HA! But she was fine going backstage after Bernie's opening night and non-Tony-Award Winning performance.
I love Barbara Cook and I just love that she said that too. I would love to know who Barbara thought should have won the award.
I wonder if she's a member of a certain facebook group.

Oh, please! I wish people would stop putting words in her mouth. She never said that CZJ should hand her Tony back - you said that. Even if you believe Musto, all Ms Cook said was that she didn't think CZJ deserved the Tony, an opinion that many have already voiced. What of it? It was said (if it was said) in the context of her act. It may have been a joke. Even if it wasn't, so what? This is another one of those stupid things that people love blowing out of proportion, as it was over on ATC.
A non-story on a slow day.
Don't even think of putting her in the same category as hunter & cuddles. Barbara Cook is a Queen. Performers who've done Sondheim have a very specific idea of how it should be done and clearly Barbara didn't think Catherine did the role justice.
barbie I have already plane tickets booked in case she does Sondheim on Sondheim in London.
Tacky and classless.
No different than the words of Hunter and Cuddles.
OH, WHO GIVES A FLYING F*CK?!
She's a saucy old broad, she's damned talented, and she can sing "Clowns" a lot better than Zeta-Jones (And I'm a Zeta-Jones fan). She can say whatever she wants. Maybe she was put off by Zeta-Jones' tacky and classless speech?
Really tacky. I'm really not a fan of the Catherine Zeta Jones bashing. It really cheapens the character of all those who feel the inclination to do it.
Barbara is a legend in a very SMALL circle of people. Lansbury would never be caught being so crass.
"Barbara Cook says Catherine Zeta-Jones should hand in the Tony her husband bought for her after she slept with everyone, so that it can rightfully go to a true Broadway performer like Hunter Foster or Jenn Cody."
TELL. EVERYONE.
Barbara Cook is crass and tacky. I've never really liked that "pinched" sound of hers anyway.
Elaine Stritch is crass and tacky too but people around here seem to love her.
I do not believe Elaine Stritch would make a similar comment at this point in her life. Sure she's crass, but I don't think she's that catty.
Elaine has always been known for her ballsy candor-its part of her charm and persona. Cook just loses class by speaking so poorly about another actress. It really seems beneath her.
Is anyone ever going to stop whining about this? Whether you're on TV, Broadway, or in movies, you are still an actor. No one complains when a Broadway actor does a movie, but once a movie actor gets cast in a play, all hell breaks loose.
Well, I think for a lot of people the issue isn't that Zeta-Jones is seen as a movie actress, just that she sucked.

Huh?
People need to get over this.
I feel like there would've been less backlash had Montego won for christ's sake.
Zeta-Jones would've been nominated and WON even if she wasn't Catherine Zeta-Jones, she gave a great performance.
Barbara Cook, and everyone else, needs to move on.
On and Barbara...you thought you should've won for...playing yourself?
^ If you read the story correctly you would know that Barbara was happy for Katie Finneran's win. It was Catherine, who was not even in her category, that she wasn't so happy with.
'you thought you should've won for...playing yourself? '
Could you reference your comment please? You obviously must have something to back it up? It is aways interesting to find out where things come from or is it entirely in the mind of the poster?
And yet none of these people want Idina to hand her Tony over to Tonya Pinkins, the rightful owner of it.
Amen Jordan!!! Can I get a witness?????
Not sure what kind of evidence you're looking for keithp, but you could look at the opening night credits on ibdb
It just lists her as Barbara Cook...cause thats who she was playing.
Barbara joins Hunter and Cuddles
I think she has all the rights in the world to say what she thinks. Well done! It's just her opinion and everyone is entitled to one.
