Well,
They have rewritten the show since it closed Off-Broadway. I have that version of the script (I am in talks to direct it, and no i will not send it to anyone, sorry.) I think mostly it closed for budgetary issues. I think Damon and John would have loved to see it on Broadway. Thankfully I think whis show will have a life now that they are slowly releasing the rights to various groups.

does the new script explain the parts that they left out, like why does Matt have a key to the church van? and why does lucas give jason enough to od after he has done such a good job of explaining the effects of drugs? AND I've always wondered what Ivy confesses to when she goes into the confessional. I never understood a lot of things that happen in the show, so I made up a whole back story line to make it make sense.

If for some reason anyone decided to PM zzanna instead of posting her answers, I'd appreciate it too as I also wonder about the things she asked. Even..."fuller"...recordings leave a lot unexplained. Thanks!

I've heard both the LA and New York versions of the show and-save for a few songs-I don't really like it. The performances are great (especially Michael Arden's tour-de-force as Peter), but something about the show just doesn't gel with me.

Coming from a gay man's point of view. I loved the show! Thought (besdieds the whole drug thing) it had a great message! Its great when they can show how hard it is coming out and everything you have to go through in that awkward stage when people really start suspecting and you know ur time for coming out is near....TERRIFYING! Badically I cried throuhg majority of the show haha!
Things I did not like....Well basically the ending. Jason seems to die so quickly and out of no where. I mean yes I kinda saw it coming but all i know is he drank whatever and went on stange, a lot of circlingl and down he went. The immediatly took him off stage like it was nothing. I also dont like the last note of the show. It doesn't seem like the song is finished and in turn left an unsettling feeling inside me. Finally, eventhough I LOVE black women, I did not like the women who played one of the sisters (she also played the virgin mary) Her voice was very very annoying and extremely hard to understand. During the song in which she tells Peter that God made no mistakes and that being gay is great, the beginning was WAY over done vocally.
I really hope they do bring it back to at least off broadway cause it is a great show and message to get out there!

(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

I too enjoyed the show in New York and was lucky enough to have a very nice conversation with Damon afterwards and meet a few cast members.

The most exciting thing about bare, is that such smart and talented voices are trying to be heard. I think the score, what I've been able to hear of it, is terrific, even if some of the marks were missed (heresay, I didnt see the show, darnit!) and even if this is never produced again, I hope that Damon is writing as we speak, and continues to do so.

I was incredibly upset when I learned that the production at Dodger Stages set for last october was cancelled. Bare is the most moving piece of theatre I have ever seen. I've heard rumors of regional productions though, if anyone knows of any I'd love to go see it again. I also sincerely hope that it returns off-broadway very soon.

BARE was an amazing production for the talent it brought together.
Henggi, Intrabartolo, Hartmere, and the incredibly talented cast, ARDEN, Green, Johnson, Lohr, Hopkins and the rest...
The DODGERS had something womderful in their hands and they let it slip away.
What a shame.

I'm in love with Michael Arden. I hope that BARE finds a life somewhere even if it is just in regional productions. This show need to be seen and eard.

Anyone know if it's possible to get sheet music for any of the songs from Bare? I'd love to have it, but haven't seen it offered anywhere. Any ideas?

I didn't care for it at all when I saw it here in LA...and yes, terribly overacted..."Look at us, we're on stage and we're being dramatic and crying" That overindulgent, self-conscious acting really bugged.

This new script doesn't deal with that much of what you asked, but it does solidify the characters more...In fact I think one little dialogue change gives a whole new take on Ivy's character. Also there are even some new songs, and some very heavily tweaked ones.
I think the key to getting this show right is finding a very talented young cast that can bring honesty and energy to their roles. Even the slightest overacting can send this into a WB teen drama, so that balance has to be carefully monitered.

Did they make a CD in LA? I'm curious as to how it compares to the NY cast

I heard that the script that they are releasing to groups is the same one used in LA. I may be wrong but I was under that impression. Akiva is "Plain Jane Fatass" in the script you have?

No....this is not correct. Plain Jane Fat Ass is not in it, and Quiet Night at Home is in. This version seems very similar to the off-Broadway production, but a few changes here and there. The biggest the opening number is different, and "Love, Dad" is now a song called "Broken Condom"...pretty funny stuff.

singingwendy- use the search feature. There have been posts on how to get the rights to the show and also about sheet music.

They keep changing the opening number, but really I enjoyed "Epiphany" in the off-Broadway production at the ATA. I don't know what they're finding wrong with it. If I had to fix something, I'd make Ivy a more sympathetic and original character; I don't care if she's lonely inside and she gets knocked up, she's still the popular queen bee and that makes her a bitch.

"Bare is the most moving piece of theatre I have ever seen."Couldn't have said it better, timmetzner!
i think they made an LA cast recording- i don't think it was wide released, but my friend had a copy and gave a copy to me. it's so. overacted, as i said and so many others. going on what akiva said, they really did make it into a WB teen drama. the entire two last songs, Abstention (I think) and No Voice, the entire cast is just on stage, sobbing their eyes out. way way too overdone.
plain jane fat ass was an interesting song, but kind of glad they cut it out.
they still did have it in the previews at dodgers, though, so i guess it was a last minute change.
over all, Bare NY MUCH better than Bare LA.
PM me for info on LA cast album.
also, anyone know yet
- on the bare sampler, did they use the LA Peter as well as Michael Arden? i hear michael, but also another peter..

No, it's only Michael Arden. What tracks are you hearing this "other" Peter?
