Did it flop because it was bad or because it wasn't making enough money? I didn't see it..

I just watched the video preview and it looked good to me but I love ANYTHING by Neil Simon soooo...
It was an awful production.

Was Tony Roberts good?
All 4 of them were miscast. Patrick Wilson came off best. Amanda Peet was the essence of agony.
It's one of the most depressing theater experiences I've ever had.

WOW! Didn't look THAT bad!

The lack of a capable cast showed how slight the material is.
I couldn't help but wonder what it could have been like if Julia Roberts did this and Amanda did Three Days of Rain.
It just wasn't funny.
When I saw it, I was far more interested in the costumes and set design. They were both gorgeous.
When you're focusing on that, you know you've got a problem. The material just isn't that funny anymore in the wake of a thousand sitcoms about the same subject.

I loved Odd Couple!
But I like almost every show I see. The only one I've seen that I don't like is Tarzan.
I enjoyed it.
It was an open run, that they made into a limited run. So, I dont know how much of a flop it was.

Amanda Peet got horrible reviews. Too bad Christina Applegate was busy doing Sweet Charity - she'd have been much better.
I hatel it,a bad waste of a good play

I enjoyed it, but thought it was awful.
I did think that Clayburgh and Roberts were great.

When you say flop, do you mean critically or financially? I remember it got creamed by most critics, but I seemed to remember many being surprised when it closed as it was turning a substantial profit. See the link below to the Broadway World story. At the time of its closing it was apparently considered enough of a success to cause serious discussions of remounting in the near future as well as a national tour.

It was a critical and financial failure.

Don't believe everything you read. BAREFOOT limped along for about four months despite being heavily discounted, barely breaking even most weeks, with attendance usually hovering in the 50s (with a few weeks in the 30s and 40s).
It was a flop.
I really didn't think it was that bad. I enjoyed it. However I do agree that Amanda Peet was the weakest in the cast.

It was pretty bad even at TDF prices.
I saw it, along with Odd Couple, which I also felt "meh" about.
For me it was the leading couple, they were badly directed and had bad chemistry. Peet wasn't a very good choice. Also the piece itself is too dated in my eyes. I thought Tony and Jill were great though.

I pretty much agree with what's been said. Roberts and Clayburgh were quite good and Wilson was pretty good (you got to see him in his tighty-whiteys) but the set was the most interesting. The costumes were kind of dull.
It was a dated little piece that played like a sitcom
To charge Broadway prices for it doomed it. It may have worked better off Broadway. The cast was talented & gave it all they had but much ado about nothing

I really enjoyed the production, but I must agree that Amanda Peet doesn't have the technique to play in a Broadway theater.
