I would suspect many of the big stars would be working with the writers of the show from the beginning of the writing process. Isn't that how besty Wolfe got the Frozen Gig? She was working with the Lopez's and was on the rehearsal track, right?

I'm sure if Sutton Foster is interested they have a pretty good idea of whether or not they want her. Lots of times production teams will ask the actor directly if they want a specific person.

They have their agents schedule appointments, so they don't have to wait all day in a cattle call. Is that what you mean by private audition?
