Posted: 6/19/07 at 7:10pmI was listening to their latest album, and realized that a lot of it sounds like it could be decent theater music with some theatrically accessible lyrics. I think someone should write a letter.

I've only heard "Funny Little Frog."
...that's Belle & Sebastion, right?

Posted: 6/19/07 at 7:40pmI agree. Broadway needs some more "original" type musicals with a different sound. I can't wait for the Flaming Lips musical.

Posted: 6/19/07 at 7:50pmI'm really out of the loop when it comes to contemporary music. I read "Belle and Sebastian" and I think of the girl from Beauty & the Beast and the crab from The Little Mermaid.

As the entire Indie-Rock scene has a much clearer sense of text and through-line (Especially as we are very much in a resurgance of the Concept Album), Belle and Sebastian would be one of myriad bands who could make a complete theatrical experience, I would also look towards Cursive, Stars, The Polyphonic Spree, or Rufus Wainwright to write a fantastic musical theatre piece.
In other news... What's up with David Byrne's Imelda Marcos project (Here Lies Love)?

Posted: 6/19/07 at 7:54pmOh, man, Cursive on B'way would be insane! Also, Wainwright could write something very beautiful and lush. I'd also like to hear a nice acoustic score by Pedro the Lion.

Cursive would be insane, but not totally absurd. They have a story-telling-like quality to their music. But as far as which indie-rocker I'd like to see write a musical, it would be Patrick Wolf. A lot of his music already seems theatrical to me, and he is just fantastic.

I thought this thread was about Belle from BEAUTY & THE BEAST and Sebastian from THE LITTLE MERMAID.
Oy!

Posted: 6/20/07 at 11:37pmAbout a month ago I would have thought the same thing Fosse; but my friend bought me a CD of Belle and Sebastion's, I absolutely LOVE IT. If were throwing out idea's for who should right music for musicals I recommend Fiona Apple or Snow Patrol; that could be really interesting.

Belle & Sebastian did get their names from cartoon characters, but not Disney characters. It was a French cartoon about a little boy and his huge white dog that aired on Nickelodeon in the mid-80s. Now I feel old. Or young, depending.
eta: Oops, the Nick version was anime, not French. But the source material is French, as was the original series.
Anyway, I'd be interested to see what they could produce musical-wise, as I like -- although not necessarily love -- their music.

Posted: 6/21/07 at 12:06amThey'd certainly come up with some interesting stuff. The New Pornographers have some stuff that seem like they could be some nice/eclectic musical theatre pieces. I agree that Stars could probably put out some cool stuff too.

I thought the same thing. I guess I'm pretty out of touch, too. :/

Posted: 6/21/07 at 12:33amYou know, I could actually see Belle and Sebastian scoring a musical. As other people have said, there's definitely a storytelling quality to their music. Man, this reminds me that I haven't listened to Tigermillk and If You're Feeling Sinister in too long.
