I think this list shows a much bigger issue. North Americas infatuation with celebrity. With all the issues in the world today, and with all the grander issues from terrorism, war, to the climate change, to cutting edge research in the medical fields, and so many more, it blows me away the importance people put on celebrity. Look at MSN, who is marrying/divorcing who in Hollywood takes equal billing with issues of world importance. Its crazy. I enjoy a good movie or theater as much as the next person, but lets keep these things in perspective. Yes there are those who use their celebrity status to bring awareness to issues and raise money for some great causes, and that of course is wonderful, but again.....perspective. Just my opinion of course.
Well, don't forget this is the same list where Wendi Murdoch wrote about Ivanka Trump.

Also, I'd venture to say there are plenty of people on this list who aren't really "celebrities," except maybe in their own fields.

Don't have an issue with celebrities being featured on the list. People like Donald Glover actually are influential. It's just that Ben Platt is not.

This really isn't baffling to anyone who's ever read a Time 100 issue. It's equivalent to People's 50 Most beautiful people issue. Just a bunch of buzzy names thrown together. It's really just the "influential" title that's ridiculous. They probably didn't want to call it "100 cool people we got some other cool people to write about them"
He's not even influential in the toilet of his dressing room.
The composers would be more influential for that matter.
I, too, find the list in general a little silly but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that a performance could be considered influential to someone who views it.
With no disrespect to his talent, I've always found that Time 100 list to be laughable.
I stopped taking it seriously years ago, and it actually diminished the Time brand in my eyes.
Kudos to Ben on all the recognition he's receiving. Time continues to prove their list is nothing but PR.

Exactly. Magazines are always looking for ways to remain relevant. Broadway is a huge industry and whoever compiles these lists probably figures it's always good to throw a bone to the theater community somewhere in the their list. They turn their attention to Broadway for a few minutes and realize some guy named Ben Platt is knocking 'em dead in some contemporary musical. Throw him in there for that, and the younger audience who will find him recognizable for his TV show, or movie, or whatever he's known for before coming to NYC, and it will find additional appeal for some of its readers. Covering all the bases.
