what if PattiKillsBroadway is actually Patti?
I think both Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone are the best Broadway actresses of our time.
Well, I think so too, BwayBelle--singing actresses, at least.
I realize there's hardly any point in even saying it, but I can never understand the vicious, lunatic need to exalt one while defecating on the other.
Like whom you like. Tell us all about it, with as many exclamation marks as your little digits can type. But all the negative stuff? Christ, is it boring!
I'm just glad to find out that I'm not the only person on these boards who hates Patti LuPone with a passion.
Greatest actor of our time? Maybe the greatest over-actor.
Ugh, she's wretched.
Bernadette Peters, on the other hand, can do no wrong in my eyes.
But, look at who Patti LuPone was up against this year at the Tonys...
They certainly weren't going to give it to Kerry Butler for Xanadu, Faith Prince for A Catered Affair didn't have any hype behind her, Jenna Russell was a newcomer (to Broadway) and was overshadowed (IMO) by Daniel Evans in Sunday...
The Tony SHOULD have gone to Kelly O'hara, but since the Tony voters always like to screw her over...Patti was the only one left. Maybe they realized they robbed Bernadette years ago and pissed off the Gypsy Gods, so they decided to try and fix it with rewarding someone who totally botched the role. Worst "Rose's Turn" ever.
Why isn't anyone concerend about how Tyne Daly and Angela Lansbury feel about Lupone's Rose?
Good question, ggersten.

STOP THE MADNESS! Stop trying to pit these two women against each other!
They have known each other for many years and, perhaps they aren't more than business acquaintances, but they are not enemies.
They both have two Tony's. They both are wonderful. Period.
And Tyne loved Patti's Rose. She said when she read Brantley's review for City Center, she turned to a woman on the subway and said he'd change his tune.

It's perfectly understandable for an actor not to want to watch someone else tackle a role that they recently played. If Evita had been revived three years after the closing I doubt that Patti would be rushing to see it. Heck, I doubt that she would see it if it were revived today. They're both talented and I'm sure there's a mutual respect and understanding.
I remember when Gypsy was revived someone asked Ethel Merman if she would have any interest in replacing Lansbury and her response was 'the only way I'd follow Angela is with a shovel.' Yet Lansbury was gracious enough to acknowledge Merman in her Tony acceptance speech.
Class wins every time.
"Class wins every time."
True. Now if only the Patti-haters would show some.
At the stage door, Bernadette always makes sure that her fans get an autograph, but be forewarned if you ask Patti for one - she might bite your head off! As for asking Patti to pose with you for a picture? Don't count on it! Be prepared for a verbal onslaught!
Interesting. I never had a problem getting an autograph with Patti and I do have a photo of us, which she graciously agreed to at the Donmar Warehouse in London. We also chatted for a few minutes. She was lovely all three times I met her.
Perhaps it wasn't Patti that was the problem? But nice of you to join yesterday simply to post negative comments about Patti. I'm sure Bernadette would be so proud.

I never thought of it that way. You're obviously absolutely right.
Don't agree with the Kelli O'Hara thing . . . LOVE her, but didn't think her performance was anything special. (Actually, this is totally my opinion, but I wasn't impressed with South Pacific and SORT of felt Gypsy deserved the award for best revival.)
If the Gods were going to be p*ssed about anything, it should have been that Kelli didn't win for Piazza. Now THAT was an AMAZING performance that TOTALLY deserved the award.
Ah, but Hanna, you're leaving out the whole "the Tony voters always like to screw [O'Hara] over" thing.
You see, it's a vast American Theatre Wing conspiracy . . .
Y E A H ! ! ! !
Kind of like WATERGATE!
Now I'm really confused. I thought the whole point of this thread is that Bernadette is supposed to win the Tony every year, regardless whether she performed or not. So what the hell does O'Hara have to do with this?
It's perfectly clear, Mr. M.
1. Patti LuPone has no talent.
2. "Evita" was a fluke, sustained only by the brilliance of Mandy Patinkin
3. LuPone is nasty and everyone hates her, including the Tony voters.
4. However, they hate Kelli O'Hara even more (citation needed), so they awarded the Tony this year to LuPone by default.
Oh, I forgot:
6.LuPone won the Tony also because the voters felt sorry for her, since she hadn't won one in 30 years.
And DON'T ask her for an autograph, or she'll bite your head off (see evidence via the link below):

If thse so-called gods hate Kelli O'Hara, they sure have a funny way of showing it. I mean, she's starred in three Broadway shows in the last 3 years, nominated for each. I wish they would hate me in that same sense!
Obviously, the Tony Committee wants to turn Kelli O'Hara into a combination Susan Lucci/Peter O'Toole perennial nominee. (Although Lucci eventually got an award).
Thank you for those links Reg. After viewing Patti's offensive and abusive behavior at the stage door, it is a wonder why anyone would even want her autograph. And why on earth would any director hire her? All of her awards, glowing reviews, and reputation as a Broadway icon could only be a result of sympathy during her 35-year Broadway career for it is clear that her lack of talent would have killed her career decades ago. She should thank God she had the critics, fans, supporting casts, Life Goes On and the American Theatre Wing to sustain her with pure pity. How else would she get a job? Clearly nobody likes her. Nor should they.
LMAO, this thread is great. I think what Mister Matt said totally sums up Patti’s behavior and I can confirm everything he said with my experiences.
I had the misfortune of meeting her once and as those videos Reginald posted show, her actions were completely repulsive. She was taking people’s playbills and posters and signing her name on them. Even going as far as reaching for the ones in the back to make sure she signed for everyone before she left. Not to mention her hideous behavior on stage the 4 times I saw her in Gypsy… putting 150% into her performance every time even when she was sick, making her intense scenes with Laura and Boyd so heart-wrenching, singing her heart out through Rose’s Turn, etc. Despicable!
legally - You see wht I mean? Not only did she vandalize other people's property with graffiti, she purposely spread contagion amongst the audience and cast when she knew she was sick. She's practically a terrorist.
Reggie, I was half expecting to get Rick Rolled.
I also had the misfortune of meeting her. she took a picture, signed my Playbill, and even said "thank you" when I told her she did a good job. how ungrateful of her.
What a bitch.
