Wondering how poor Bernadette feels about the success of the recent Gypsy. Does anyone know if she has seen Patti do it? I imagine it would be pretty awkward for her, since the show was mounted in '03-'04. I loved Bernadette in the role, and also loved Sam's direction. I am equally impressed with the current Gypsy as well.
Any thoughts on Bernadette's feelings regarding Lupone Gypsy?

The three of us talk about it all the time over brunch.
Sorry to be obnoxious, but nobody really knows for sure. She may have given a cordial public response, but nobody here really has an idea, whether they pretend to be an insider or not.
Piragua . . . I think I overheard you guys the other day. Didn't Bernadette say "yo, LuPINE . . . MY revival lasted 3 months longer. Eat my granny shorts!"
LOL

In a LA Times interview I read a couple of months ago, she said she did not see the latest production. And she didn't imply that she was going to either. She said something to the effect of, it takes a long time to create enough distance from a role in order to see it. She commented that she saw the revival of Sunday.

Isn't it funny how some performers are hated no matter how wonderful they are and some are loved no matter how awful they are?
Well she wasn't at the Tonys, she had to film a movie. Now THAT would have been awkward for her. To watch Patti's performance, and to see her win the award she lost.

She has no reason to feel badly. She was in a very good production of a great musical that ran a little over a year (if I'm not mistaken). She was nominated for a Tony, and was robbed (in my opinion) by the chunky girl who has lots of SPUNK. Why should she feel badly? This is a different production, with a different cast, a difference director, and a much different vision. They both did/do great work.

Since it obviously is meant to have relevance to the thread..elaborate?
Please don't invite JoeKv to spew his venomous hatred for LuPone.
It's bad enough when it's put out there unasked for.
There is no comparison between the two. Bernadette was phenomenal in Gypsy and sang an absolutely heart wrenching performance of Rose's Turn. Her Rose had many dimensions and took you on an emotional roller coaster. It was one of the best Broadway performances that I have ever seen.
I thought both Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone were outstanding in their respective revivals of Gypsy. Both actresses brought something different to the role and both were among the best performances I've ever seen on Broadway. I don't get why we have to choose one over the other. I happen to like them both.
Regarding the success of Patti's Gypsy, I hardly think Bernadette is losing sleep at night over it.

I agree 100%!!!! Having met both Patti and Bernadette, I must say that Bernadette is truly the Queen of Broadway! She is very gracious and kind, unlike Patti, who throws plates at audience members, breaks character to pick them up, and then decides not to apologize to her victims! At the stage door, Bernadette always makes sure that her fans get an autograph, but be forewarned if you ask Patti for one - she might bite your head off! As for asking Patti to pose with you for a picture? Don't count on it! Be prepared for a verbal onslaught! As for talent, all I have to say is, which of the two did it take almost 30 years to win their second Tony Award? To end this discussion for all time, Bernadette has it, and Patti has HAD IT!!!!
^ talk about a lollercoaster.

Since I've not met either of these women, I can't comment. However, how gracious one is over the other and the length of time between Tony wins doesn't make one more talented; because, if you want to split hairs, Bernadette lost when nominated for "Gypsy" (which is still a huge mystery to me), while Patti won for the role.
I loved both of these women in this role for totally different reasons. I liked the Sam Mendes production, I LOVE this production.

This just made me crack up so much.
P.S. I *love* Patti!
I didn't realize that Broadway legend status was a personality contest. Some of the biggest bitches make for the best legends
Pluss..Bernadette is waaayyyyy more sexier than Patti. (I'll stop now)
Bernadette is more "cute" than "sexy", in my opinion.
This thread is ridiculous on so many levels.

Thirty years between Tony wins is quite a long time to go without a "hit"! The only reason Patti won for "Gypsy" is because everyone felt sorry for her since it had been so long since her last "win", especially after her disastrous portrayal of Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd". All I can hope and pray is, that after "Gypsy" closes in a couple of weeks, Patti will kindly stop butchering Sondheim shows, and leave them to the REAL talent of other icons.
Personality is one of the most important traits of a true star. No one wants to work with a bitch, no matter how many idiots come to see the show. Producers and directors are more apt to work with a star who can deliver on-stage as well as off. No doubt the few LuPone fans who are left are trying to dredge up some scrap of sympathy for her, from the time when she actually had some semblance of talent.....aka Evita. They are simply jealous of the fact that the 2003 revival of "Gypsy" ran longer than the current one.
Given the fact that Bernadette has been on Broadway for close to 40 years, I would cast my lot in with that kind of remarkable talent, over a washed-up has-been! Apart from "Evita", LuPone doesn't have any talent to stand on, and that show was only a success thanks to Mandy Patinkin!
Go. Away.
LMAO. It's official. You are an IDIOT.
I haven't seen so many idiotic statements in a long time.
Wow.
f. No doubt the few LuPone fans who are left are trying to dredge up some scrap of sympathy for her
That's why the GYPSY cast album debuted at #58 on the Billboard top 200 albums. Rarely does a cast album peak that high. And also her 30 year old club act debuted on Billboard's Heatseaker chart at #25, which I must say is higher than any Bernadette album hit on that chart. She has a ton of fans. More now than ever.

An Open Letter to PattiKillsBroadway:
Dear Mrs. Peters:
Your daughter Bernadette is very talented indeed, but you're just making yourself look ridiculous--not to say idiotic--with these rantings of yours.
If you don't stop, the nurses are going to take away your computer priviledges.
Best regards,
