She could at least have the decency to sign "Bernadette Peters." Jeez! Who'd want Patti LuPone's name written all over their Playbills?
I'm just glad to see this behavior exposed. I thought I was the only one who found it appalling.
Well, I believe Patti actually spoke to me at the opening night of some show I went to . . . can't remember which one because I considered walking out because SHE was there.
But to make matters worse, I ran into Bernadette at an animal hospital in NY one time . . . I almost decided to stop treatment on my baby!!!
I think my life has been ruined. I can't go to shows anymore and I can't seek medical assistance for my pets. What should I do?
Quick!--put on the OBC recording of "Sunday in the Park . . ."
The song of Bernadette can heal all!!!
You better not really piss off Patti or she'll run you down with her SUV!
Wow, Reginald Tresilian...you're quite annoying, aren't you?
Yes, I respect Patti LuPone's stamina. She does do what so many other Broadway actors don't...she performs no matter what the stakes are. It's very impressive. Her performance in Gypsy just isn't my cup of tea. I enjoy her in Evita, how can you not? I'm simply not a fan of her in general.
And I did not say the Gods hate Kelli O'hara. It just seems to me that Kelli is always over-looked. Yes, she receives the nominations, which is a great accomplishment in itself, it's just sad to me that she has yet to win one. And yes...I do believe that while Sara Ramirez was thrilling in Spamalot...Kelli O'hara was robbed that year at the Tonys.
I think Bernadette's performance in Gypsy was much more deserving of a Tony than Patti LuPone's, but sometimes it depends on the year, the shows that season, and the fellow opponents.
When it comes down to it, I just can't stand Patti LuPone, but great for those that do.
And I must say...so many people on these boards act ridiculous sometimes when things are said that they don't agree with. I hardly ever speak my mind on these boards (with the exception of Patti LuPone topics) and this is why. I've been on these boards for four years now and the people on here keep getting more annoying.
That's all.
You went on a tirade about how she is talentless and did not deserve her TONY.
I suppose its a good thing you don't express your opinion on the board very often because it seems you won't defend it with the same fervent hatred you used to express it in the first place.
first of all, I think it's so ridiculous to say that any actor working on Broadway, especially someone with Patti's success, is talentless.
second of all, it's not a crime to say you don't like someone. but to turn it into a battle and bring personalities into it is something else entirely. you don't know any of these people, so don't pass judgment on them.
third of all, I love timesquare's graphic.
fourth of all, I actually saw both Bernadette and Patti in Gypsy. (my opinion matters tons, too) I greatly enjoyed both of them. I've said this several times, but I actually saw some similarities in their performances. I think the role suits Patti better vocally AND I think she was in a stronger production. I find her to be a better actress than Bernadette (and I love Bernadette), and thought her Rose was more fully realized.
fifth of all, they don't have time to compete with each other. they're too busy being Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone, Divas Extraordinaire.
Well, I never brought personalities into it...I based my current opinion of Patti LuPone on her level of talent and portrayal of Mama Rose.
And I didn't show fervent hatred...I simply expressed my dislike in explaining why I thought she won her Tony.
And, went on a "tirade?" Please, let's not exaggerate.
And I didn't show fervent hatred...I simply expressed my dislike in explaining why I thought she won her Tony.
- You said earlier in this thread you hate Patti with a passion. You do this time after time. You say you hate her guts, then when you get attacked for it, you make lame excuses. I just cannot imagine why someone would hate a performer with a "passion." Its almost sickening.
TimeSquare3, your image had me CRACKING UP!
Mywonderwa11, I was mostly talking to PattiKillsBroadway, but if you found me annoying, that's okay, too.
You can add to the list of things I don't understand (see above: posters who need to tear down one performer in order to praise another) people like you who post nasty comments--"hate Patti LuPone with a passion," "Ugh, she's wretched," "totally botched the role," "Worst 'Rose's Turn' ever"--and then are baffled when people object.
I'd actually be interested in hearing about your love for Bernadette. I think she's wonderful, too; I really liked her Rose. It's always more interesting to hear about people's passions than their hatreds. ("Want to know why I find African cultures fascinating?" Sure! "Want to hear how I hate black people?" Nope.)
You hardly ever speak your mind except on Patti LuPone topics? I simply find that odd. Still, if that's important to you, by all means do. But you can't be surprised when folks respond with their own, sometimes differing, opinions.
Mywonderwa11 is changing his tune since he got called out. You called her "wretched" in an earlier post, but now you're backpeddling. I've never, never, never understood why people who dislike Patti LuPone make their disgust so hyperbolic and vocal. Professional jealousy I think---look how obviously bitter you are about Kelli O'Hara. Patti was nominated for five Tonys and won two, not including what may have happened with Sunset Boulevard.
Considering how many Broadway performers today will have worn themselves out by 2012, it's astounding that actresses like Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone have performed the greatest role in musical theatre history on Broadway to critical acclaim within just a few years. And furthermore, Patti and Bernadette are great because they know how to have FUN as actors...the whole crop of college graduates that are now working on Broadway since the early 90's have sucked every ounce of enjoyment out musical theatre.
Although Kelli O'Hara is a talented, pretty young blonde, Patti and Bernadette are Broadway legends because they're the stuff that Broadway was made out of-ENTERTAINMENT.
