Posted: 9/2/09 at 6:02pmI think that Bernadette Peters has a lot of things. Money, Looks, Doesn't Age. But, I don't like her singing voice. I am saying (How can you like that wretched voice!) When you have seven tony nominations many many people think that you are good, but i just don't like her.

I think she is ageing...
But I agree her voice is a little strange at first...what really did it for me is the SITPWG OBC DVD; after that I just 'clicked'. I especially LOVE her Gypsy album which I'm sure some would claim is the hoarsest of all her recordings. There is just something about her and her voice that I can't explain why I love so much.

"When you have seven tony nominations many many people think that you are good, but i just don't like her."
Because sometimes being a good actress is more than just having a good singing voice. She has presence and clearly loves what she is doing.

She's a distinctive personality with a distinctive voice. She also has enough style and talent to be equally at home performing Herman, ALW or Sondheim.
There are a lot of generic sopranos in search of a personality in this business. Picking on someone who found success with the gift of originality is a little perverse.

Posted: 9/2/09 at 6:36pmAnd while she may not be your cup of tea, she obviously is talented enough in enough people's eyes to have the level of success she has. Broadway isn't like film, tv, or recording where a mediocre talent will get you by with the right marketing. You either got it, or you ain't, and she got it.

Posted: 9/2/09 at 6:43pmMost divas have distinctive voices and they all have their haters. Bernadette, Patti, Audra-some love them, some hate them. But what they all have is personality, a killer work ethic, and they can sing. Like someone else mentioned, they are the real deal who show up and put it out there. There is no lip-synching, background tracks, smoke and mirrors, unlike all the broads at the VMAs. Bernadette is true talent and stage persona.

I love me some Bernadette peters! there is just something I liked more about the peters revival. and the thing that I like about her she has her own syle and stage personality that's seperate from any other actress and she's just brilliant.

Very well said Bettyboy.
But if it makes you feel better, I also hate her voice. But I think Bettyboy explained it really well, when I talk about my favorite DIVAS, such as Sarah Brightman or Liza Minnelli, a lot of people tend to hate them, and others love them just like I do.
Then I don't care for Bernardette Peters, Eric Clapton, and many other Broadway and non-Broadway singers/performers.
I think they are very lucky to have gotten far in the business, but I respect that people admire them. I still don't really get it, but oh well. Live and let live!

Posted: 9/2/09 at 8:00pmI agree with pretty much what everyone said above. It's more about Bernadette then the voice, which I don't like, but it is generally fine. The one exception where I don't like it? "Unexpected Song"...where I think another controversial singer-diva does it best (Sarah Brightman). But there's plenty of her that I really like: "Time Heals Everything."

Posted: 9/2/09 at 8:15pmPhilly are you referring to her performance of "Unexpected Song" on the OBCR. Not her best. She does it better on her concert DVD and is also great doing it on "Hey Mr. Producer" and "Sondheim Etc Etc".

Posted: 9/2/09 at 8:19pmIt couldn't be that bad, it won her a Tony.

Posted: 9/2/09 at 8:20pmThe recording isn't her finest hour but I imagine singing that score eight shows a weeks wasn't kind to her voice.

Yes, to the recordings. Wasn't fond of it on Sondheim Etc Etc though either.
I don't know all that much about singing, but I imagine it is very difficult to hit some of the high notes Lloyd Webber wrote that song for that it seems on Sarah Brightman can master (Although Christiane Noll's version is pretty good too!).
#18re: Bernadette Peters
Posted: 9/2/09 at 8:32pmI actually just relistened to the Sondheim Etc Etc,...it isn't so bad, just seems like she wasn't ready for the final note, which is what I've been judging that particular song on.

Atleast Bernadette tries to make the best out of the last note.
I know this isn't Brightman in concert or anything, but this is my favourite version of the song.

Everyone else can't seem to get off the last note like her.

Everyone has articulated this pretty well but I might as well pile on.
I do think many great stars are polarizing due to the strength of their personalities or talent. What engenders great love in some people is sure to inspire great hatred in others. I usually maintain that anyone the majority of people like lack the kind of star power that creates great emotion. (Or they're old enough to be consigned to that neutered "legend" category.)
I'm a Bernadette partisan. I love her voice, her looks, the way she wraps her voice around a song--I love how much of a complete package she is, with everything shouting "Bernadette"! However, like muscle23ftl said, when I think about a star I can't stand but others love I chalk it up to different tastes, knowing there's something about their talent that speaks strongly to others as Bernadette's talent speaks to me.

philly, that last note of Miss Brightman is heavenly!
I don't think anyone can sing that song like she does. Wonderful!
