To Master's point, I'm not certain that there has been any Broadway or film Rose post-Merman that has not shown signs of strain or considerable effort. The combination of belting vocals and brash vulgarity that is the character came naturally to Merman. It fit her like a glove. Every one of the post-Merman Roses has a debit or two against them. Some feel Lansbury was excellent at the vocals and playing the madness, but somewhat too patrician in her persona. Tyne Daly was not a natural born singer, and had to work extra-hard to act her way through the songs. Roz Russell of course, was dubbed. Bette Midler, though she seems just right on paper, strikes me as a bit too much in the TV movie. Linda Lavin, another one who should have been perfect, made Rose too unlikable. If Bernadette had to work hard to fight off her demure, doll-like image, I don't think she's unique in showing the effort behind her performance.
