Emma Zaks would make a great Rose when she's old enough.
Emma already looks old enough to play either Madame Rose, Mame Dennis or even Norma Desmond. Heck, she even looks old enough to play The Drowsy Chaperone or Joanne in COMPANY.

I have a copy of every recording of Gypsy that I know to exist thus far, and Bernadette's is by far my favorite. I am a huge LuPone fan, but I don't see this recording de-throning Bernie. I haven't been able to see the production (yet) but I must admit I'm a little less than impressed with the videos I've seen of it thus far. But I will be buying the CD tomorrow, and won't pass my final judgement until I actually see the production.
I agree with the Zaks casting. I could picture her singing "Liasons" or "(In Just)No Time at All".

i think i preferred Bernadette's for character. But i definitely prefered Patti's vocally.
I find Bernadette Peters' acting in the recording to be fascinating in every way. Plus, for me, hers is the sexiest "Small World" and "You'll Never Get Away" out of the main five GYPSY recordings.
Unfortunately, the rest of the cast is not as exhilarating as the one on the '08 revival recording. Tammy Blanchard (whom I adore in her films) can't match Laura Benanti's breath-taking performance as Louise/Gypsy and Leigh Ann Larkin surpasses Kate Reinders in every way imaginable (at least on recording).
You know.. this subject really deserves further discussion. My CD of Peter's "Gypsy" makes a lovely coaster to place my nice cold glass of water on. I alternate it with a Lyle Lovett CD someone once gave me.
I think ray pointed out an important reason that, in my opinion, this Gypsy is a better production than the Bernadette revival - the supporting cast is MUCH stronger in this one. I find Patti to be a better fit for the role vocally and acting-wise, although I enjoyed Bernadette when I saw her. actually, I think she and Patti make similar choices in playing Rose, especially the sexual aspect. I mean, can anyone deny the chemistry Patti and Boyd have as Rose and Herbie? I think Patti is the stronger actress, though, and has the stronger supporting cast, resulting in a more fully realized characterization and production.
