Why do sooo many people on this message board dislike this cast recording ? I actually think Bernadette did a better job on the cast recording than Patti.
I liked Bernie's recording, not as much as I think I'm going to like Patti's; But I still like it.
Eh, I thought it was good until I heard other recordings.
Bernadette's remains my favorite recording of Gypsy. Her performance of Gypsy was fantastic and I cannot say that about Patti as Rose. Bernadette's performance made me love theater and was one of the best performances I have ever seen on Bway. Updated On: 8/25/08 at 03:05 AM
Bernadette was a fantastic Mama Rose! Which is more than I could ever say for Patti LuPone...but I'm still going to buy the Patti recording...because it's Gypsy (and because of Laura Benanti)
I agree. Do NOT enjoy Patti as Rose, and Bernadette's recording and performance will ALWAYS be the stand out to me, but I'll still buy Patti's recording.
I like the Bernadette recording, but ever since I found out she was sick when they recorded it's all I can think about when I listen to it.
The only thing I don't like about the Bernadette recording is Bernadette.
It is excruciating to listen to her attempts at singing this score.
I do love David Burtka as Tulsa, though.

Is the Patti Lupone recording still not out over there? I just bought it yesterday over at dress circle, that musical theatre shop in London, but I guess they do sell CD's early sometimes. anyway, I like it a lot better to the bernadette peter's recording, especially the strip.

I just heard from amazon.com that my Patti recording has been shipped. I enjoy the Bernadette recording also---but, having seen Patti too, I'd like both CDs.

Bernadette's was my first real exposure to the score, and while I do enjoy it's "completeness" I find it very cold and sterile. Peters is NOT at her best, Blanchard comes off absolutely dead during "The Strip," and the children are highly annoying.
I'm also not a terrific fan of the large amounts of dialogue. I get that some people like it, but personally, I'd rather just hear the songs, that's why I bought the CD in the first place.
I am eagerly awaiting Gypsy with LuPone (who I thoroughly enjoyed live back in July)

It's a beautifully produced recording, but it's painful to hear Bernadette struggle with the score. She acts the hell out of it (though I don't like a lot of her choices) but she just doesn't have the chops to sing it.
It ranks only just a hair above Daly's recording, IMHO.

To each his own. I'll take Peters sick over Patti giving the best performance of her lifetime.
Having seen both performances live and owning both recordings, I can say both incredible women give amazing and different interpretation of the role.
I enjoy both.
Both sing the role perfectly.
Both are wonderful in role.
Bernie's Rose has a much more softer edge than Patti's tough as nail's Rose.
Sorry, but it's rather preposterous to say she struggled with the score. Even sick, she sang it comfortably, at times thrillingly. If you like LuPone's better, great, but honestly, Ms. Peters was not vocally challenged by Rose's songs.
Was Bernie sick during the recording of her GYPSY?
Tyne Daly was indeed sick during the recording of her GYPSY, but Bernadette too?
This is the first I've heard of Bernadette being sick -- everyone knows Tyne was sick.
The sound quality overall production of the LuPone recording is about 100x better than the Bernadette recording.
Sorry, Auggie, but it's preposterous not to acknowledge that Peters struggled with the score.
I liked her very much, but I do think that vocally the role was a stretch for her. I think it's a testament to her talent that she pulled it off at all, let alone as well as she did.

Auggie, I can't speak to what sounded like in performance, but on that recording, her voice is clearly over-taxed. She struggles for breath and notes -- making up for that (or at least trying to) with her acting the role.
Lansbury sings it much more easily.
Lansbury sings it easily because the keys are lowered and altered throughout - sometimes changing mid-song. I don't know what all of this "gasping" and "overtaxing" talk is really about. Bernadette sang it fine and I really don't hear strain in her voice. That little bit of rasp in her singing has been a quality of her voice for many years now. She hasn't had her pure 70s sound from around Sunday and Song & Dance onward.

Smaxie -- I guess that's why different folks have different opinions.
You listen to that recording and love the sound of her voice ... I find it often painful to listen to. It just sounds like she hurts when she sings that score. That's what my ear hears and obviously you don't.
And it's not to belittle her talent. But not every actor is built to play every role. I would cringe to hear Mary Martin or Kristen Chenoweth sing Rose.

Tyne was sick?
I had no idea.
I enjoy some things about the recording. I agree with Husk; I'll add that Bernadette's acting before and after Rose's Turn is awful. She makes some strange choices with pauses and emphasis. Very distracting.

Well, perhaps that all had to do with the fact that she was sick...?
"Well, perhaps that all had to do with the fact that she was sick...?"
Perhaps it did.
As I say, I liked her performance. I think she's extraordinarily talented and, more, very charismatic. I always like her. But I do sometimes feel that she has X amount of natural vocal ability that gets put into a Y sort of role. I sometimes feel concerned for her when watching her sing huge vocal parts.
All, of course, just my opinion.
