I hope this goes into production!

Is there really an issue with age? I mean, Bernadette looks incredible!

She looks good for her age. That doesn't mean she looks 20.

I'm not familiar with the show but if it's true (as Gavenston2 claimed) that the first act is more comic and the second act is more serious, does age really matter? Maybe it will add to the humour, lol..

LOL! Good point, qolbinau!

I'm not familiar with the show, either. But I'm quite sure that Bernadette and Martin can pull it off. What a treat to see them back on Broadway together!

We're not talking slapstick comedy in Act 1. We're talking "romantic comedy". Act 2 is more dramatic. The show doesn't contain the kind of humor that a blatant age difference would make hyper funny.

Those of you who aren't familiar with the show really should listen to it some time. It's a very charming show about what fifty years of marriage is like.

I saw the production with Kate Baldwin and Lewis Cleale up in Westport and the two of them were perfection...it's a really sweet little show with a lovely score. I think this is a show that works best with two actors in their 30s (or who read around there), because it's not crazily unbelievable when they're very young in the beginning and they can use age make-up at the end. The production in Connecticut was very effective and in the end really moving. I'd love to see the show again and see it done on Broadway but I'd really prefer them to cast it younger.

It seems clear they need two big names for this revival to work. What young Broadway stars have names big enough? They would have to go to Hollywood, it seems. Looking on wikipedia Mary Martin was 53 when she performed the role though so still not convinced about the age issue..

Are Bernadette Peters and Martin Short big enough names to sell this show?

I think Shorty and Bernie are certainly big enough names for the show.

Bernadette's voice has been off-and-on throughout the whole run of Follies.

They're definitely big enough names. Especially Marty, I'd say. I've educated myself on the show since my last post and I've fallen in love with the idea of a Marty and Bernadette revival. I really hope it happens.

For the people who say that Martin would have to tone down his "schtick"...have you not seen his work on Law & Order: SVU, Weeds or Damages (which he was nominated for an Emmy) The man is an actor in every sense of the word. He's just a character actor. Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me and Little Me both showed his comedy/vaudeville style humor. The man can clearly tone it down when he wants to:

Short is 61, but when he was 40, he played a 10 year old. I think we're okay. Bernadette Peters & Martin Short To Team Up For I DO, I DO?

Why on earth would ANYONE bring up political correctness with a show that clearly takes place decades upon decades ago when the attitudes were the attitudes. If a modern audience cannot figure that out, or especially people on these boards, perhaps they should only go to plays and musicals that take place now. Unbelievable.

(From listening to the cast recording) Bernadette's "Goodnight" would be ADORABLE. I think she will be completely fine singing the score, it's much more simple than FOLLIES and it's not like Mary Martin was as strong a vocalist as Bernadette. This is a good role for her. It's funny (her humour will suit "Nobody's Perfect") and cute, there are ballads she can show her vulnerability etc. I don't know if there would be many surprises to her performance though.

After reading up on the plot and listening to the score, I'm even more excited for this to happen. I agree with you, qolbinau, about the score being simple, but Bernadette will definitely bring a lot of depth to it vocally. These two have such great chemistry together, so this show seems perfect for them.

I'm not sure its really relevant or even fair to suggest saying that Mary Martin was not as strong a vocalist as Bernadette Peters. Martin did just fine singing a wide assortment of vocally demanding roles (including ANNIE GET YOUR GUN) in a time pre-dating microphones. If anything, I'm not quite as sure Peters could have pulled off that vocal feat.

Martin Short is definitely big box office, as evidenced by the enormous profits generated by his mega-hits The Goodbye Girl, Little Me, and Fame Becomes Me.

I agree with Michael Bennett that there's a limited audience for this show. I saw it back several years ago when Karen Ziemba did it and it just wasn't that great. It's a remnant of the 1950s fluff musicals (like Bells Are Ringing) that give a good 2 hours of entertainment, but you don't take it with you when you leave the theater.

And Bernadette and Martin are too old to be playing the roles. I'm thinking Sutton Foster would be more suited for the woman's role.

And Bernadette's "Flaming Agnes" just won't sizzle. She's too introspective for the song.

I definitely don't agree about Bernadette not being as capable a singer as Mary Martin. Bernadette can certainly project her voice and hold her own during any performance. I mean, she did sing an entire first act in SONG AND DANCE.

It's not as if she's a new entertainer who has always had the pleasure of wearing a body microphone.

That was over twenty-five years ago, though. Her voice isn't really what it was even ten years ago.

I don't know that this is the kind of show that people would go to see a "surprising" performance by either lead, it's just a cute little show that would work out beautifully at Encores! or if they are looking for a Broadway run, I agree that Roundabout or MTC would be the way to go.
As someone else said, Short was fantastic playing a dramatic role on DAMAGES, he was absolutely perfection. I imagine he'd bring his A-game along with Peters.

I think the show is too small for Encores! It would get eaten in that theatre.

Was it originally orchestrated for a full orchestra? The production I saw in Westport only had two pianos (I believe).

I would have loved to see Bernie as Sally 10 yrs ago when her voice was in real tip-top shape. Granted, then she may have looked too young for the role (even though she was in her 50s then) but I think the transitions would have been much cleaner then. She's also developing the "Liza Lisp" as of the past couple yrs (which Judy also got as she got older).

I'll concede that Bernadette's voice has gone through some wear and tear over the years, but she still has a great set of pipes. I certainly wouldn't underestimate her singing ability.

I didn't see her and Marty in THE GOODBYE GIRL, so I'm hoping they go on with I DO! I DO! (and it's a hit!).
