I am still shocked at the loss of Bernadette's husband. Does anyone know if she will indeed, still appear at the MISSISSIPPI RISING concert? I believe it is scheduled to be broadcast live on MSNBC starting at 8pm Eastern time tonight, Saturday.
If I am correct and this concert is taking place tonight and Bernadette does appear..........Wow. That will be an amazing moment.

I mean...she's not Mrs. Norman Maine, for God's sake.
She actually exists. And I don't need her to push herself to do something like that just so we can have an 'amazing' moment.

She is performing at my school and I work for the arts center there, so I asked if they knew if she had cancelled...they said she hasn't yet...and that she should be performing...end of October.
I would love to see her come, but if it's too much, of course, I don't want her to strain herself...or stress herself.
But perhaps performing is her best way to cope.
But I wonder (and it's a scary thought)...if there had been no Katrina, and no Gershwin benefit, would she have been with him?

Very doubtful. This was a seemingly short business trip. Also, if she were there (in Europe), I'm guessing she would not have been on any helicopter. If anything she probably would have been out shopping while he was taking care of whatever business.

People can perform soon after the death of a loved one. I don't know how they do it...but some people do.
A girl in our production of Singin' In The Rain (about 2 weeks ago) lost her mother 3 days before a performance and still went on for the 2 performances. She played Dora--and she was just as perky as she had been the week prior to the loss.
Not many people can do this--but it has happened.

I have asked myself that exact question ever since I heard about this tragedy......

For some -- and I'm certainly not speaking for Bernadette -- performing can be therapeutic or cathartic after a personal tragedy. Irving Berlin knew what he was talking about.
You get word before the show has started
That your favorite uncle died at dawn
Top of that, your ma and pa have parted
You're broken-hearted, but you go on

OK, so I found out:
Her concert tour (I guess it's a tour) that she's doing has not been cancelled. A lot of people have been asking that at our BO, and the answer is, "the show will go on." And many patrons walk away surprised...

Posted: 10/2/05 at 12:51pmYears ago in St Louis Patti LaBelle was in concert. She came onstage and announced her sister had passed earlier that day, from cancer. She devoted the show to her sister and was AMAZING. Some people have such a constitution, some do not.

Posted: 10/2/05 at 5:34pmtheater is very cathartic. This year i lost someone very very close to me and the day i found out, i went to rehearsal anyway. The amazing thing about doing theater is that you get to become someone else. Once you walk through that stage door the world washes away from you and for those few hours nothing else much matters. I think Ms. Peter's will keep most of her engagements, she is a ravishing performer and i am sure that theater will help her immensly.
