Bernadette as Glinda?

Not now of course, but 30 years ago I think she would have been great.

You must remember all the same that at the crux of every game is knowing when it's time to leave the table... And it's important to be artful in your exit. No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.

Fifth. As if needed but still I must stress the point.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

30 years ago, or 1975, Bernadette had already put a complex, emotionally varied REAL character up on the stage--Mabel, to be exact. Why do you think she could or would want to play a cartoon, as entertaining as Glinda might be? And I personally would not want to see her regress.

Oh well, let's just say it--I'm really not sure she could sing Glinda.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

I really don't see it. Berandette is a great comic actress, but she really doesnt have the vocal chops.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

A couple of years ago (around the time the show opened) Ken Mandlebaum made some comment in his column about how he couldn't help but envisioning a young Bernadette Peters and a young Patti LuPone playing the leads in Wicked.

So there you go. You're not the only one to have thought this.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

What do you mean why? It's just a thought I had. I think she would have been wonderful. She probably would have been able to hit those high notes back in the day. I don't see what's the big deal about her "regressing" since this is a purely hypothetical situation.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

I guess one could say that it is a purely hypothetical "regress", since I am also "allowed" to express my opinion.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

How about we move the story forward and have Wicked: The Later Years starring Bernadette and Patti and then Wicked: The Final Years with Andrews and Burnett or Lansbury and Stritch.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

Bernadette NEVER had the legit soprano range required to sing Galinda.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

Harvey as Elphaba and Rosie as Glinda.
Enough to really draw them in....Madame Morrible. Donald Trump

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

I'm pulling for the incredible Angela Lansbury to play Morrible. She may be a bit too old but you can't even tell when Morrible's drag makeup is on. She would be exceptional, IMO.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

Julie Andrews would have sang the role beautifully! I think Jenny Galloway (i think that's right) would be a perfect Madame Morrible!

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

I think if you REALLY want to regress Wicked with talk fo what might have been, toss it back to the 60s and envision a young, in-her-prime Barbara Cook as Glinda. That's perfect casting (for the time period, anyway).

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

Peresonally, I think Bernadette is a bit overrated...but, for all we know, if she could get offered the role of Mama Rose, then I'm sure someone will offer her Glinda...

Surprised she didn't take on Golda in FOTR.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

i agree with beergoggles...JULIE ANDREW! oh man, i love that lady.

but, bernadette, well, sure, if you'd like. i just can't imagine her singing those high notes, that's all

What a surprise - another pointless, stupid Wicked thread.

re: Bernadette as Glinda?

I don't even think Julie has that upper range for Galinda, that role is so high. Julie has.. had.. HAS (sorry, couldn't help myself) plain not-too-high soprano. Granted, she had the sweetest and purest plain not-too-high soprano voice.. I couldn't really see Julie play cutesy.. as she BASICALLY invented the Broadway ingenue. And Glinda is not an ingenue.

But I'm just being nit-picky.

Bernadette is too sexy to play Glinda. She's invented the sexy cute. Not quirky enough.

Again, nit-picking.

Liza playing Elphie.. I could see that. And during defying gravity she could reach out her arms in that spaztasic way that she does, and do that weird desperate grabbing motion she does with her hands. It would be brilliant.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.
