I doubt the show will run past her contract. It had problems before and it will just vacate the theater for another show.

To the best of my knowledge, the show won't run past Bernadette's contract... however I can dream and if it did I have two words for you:
Michele. Pawk.

Posted: 4/4/04 at 11:20pmI've said this before, but Patti LuPone was born to play Mama Rose. However it won't happen while Arthur Laurents is still alive because he hates Ms LuPone.

Patti LuPone
Victoria Clark
Michele Pawk (wouldn't it be something with her and John together?)
Maureen Moore
Judy Kaye

if the name "Gypsy" could sell the show itself (which it cant)
I would love either Michele Pawk or Carolee Carmello.

Ms. LuPone is absolutely perfect for the role, there's no question about that. I think that the show would do pretty well, if she was the lead, just because the Broadway population is in love with her talent.
Michele Pawk would be amazing, but she's not nearly enough of a name.
Patty Duke? Rose is pretty young---no older than 50 when this show takes place. Patty Duke looks about 60-65...way too old for the role.

Patty Duke is 57 (the same age group as Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters)and when she is not being made up to look older for her lastest TV Show or Movie, she looks like any other 57 year old woman.
Ms. Duke has already played the part and received very good reviews. Type in the following link to read one of them.

Posted: 4/5/04 at 12:36pmI truly dislike this production and hope it dies. However, for stunt casting-- I think Meryl Streep would be GREAT! Back in reality, Pawk would be an excellent Rose.
#18re: re: Bernadette replacements...
Posted: 4/5/04 at 1:20pmBut the role isn't a 57 year old woman---it's much younger than that- and Peters and LuPone have the ability to look, move, and have the energy that a younger woman has. Duke may look like every other 57 year old woman out there, but during the show, Rose wasn't 57.

Must I post the link of Patty Duke singing one more time!
She could'nt sing in 1967...
She can't sing now!

Posted: 4/5/04 at 2:05pmBernadette's initial contract has run out or is about to but she is extending. I believe she extended until September, the same as John Dossett and I'm going to assume the rest of the cast. I don't see the show going beyond September. The whole cast has breathed new life into the show enabling them to stay open and I'm sure they will do fairly well throughout the summer.

Posted: 4/5/04 at 7:13pmI agree with Dollypop and BillyLawlor. I think Lupone would be fabulous in the role, even if Laurents hates her.
