I just bought the recording off of iTunes, and its fantastic!

I'm wondering if the packaged CD comed with a helpful synopsis (like See What I Wanna See did). For SWIWS, it helped me understand and therefore enjoy the album so much more! Anyone know if Bernarda's got one too?

Yes, the CD does come with a synopsis. Very helpful, especially if you aren't clear on the story.

I bought this at Borders yesterday. Now, I didn't see the show, and I only knew the basics (A woman lives with her maid, mother, and five daughters and keeps them confined to their house when the husband dies). I could either buy this or DROWSY CHAPERONE. I decided to but this, obviously, because I love Daphne Rubin-Vega, and the music sounded good from what I heard. All I can say is that I loved it. It was powerful, beautiful, and emotional. If only I had seen it...

I was absolutely Bernarda obsessed for about a week.
And I still go around singing, "My daughter died a virgin," at least 20 times a day.

Phylicia sounds INCREDIBLE, and so does Nikki M James. Candy has grown on me, and Daphne sounds like she's in Rent.

"That's how the boys talk to me... meow".

Once again, I am mostly impressed with LaChiusa.
What a score, what a score.
SO powerful, so well written. I need to go find the play now.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

LostLeander - I noticed that on the recording. She didn't have that rock sound in the theatre. I don't know where it came from. I love the deepness of Candy's voice.

And I sang that line in public once. Got weird looks. Or maybe it was the Bernarda costume I was wearing...either way Bernarda Alba CD

i got the CD and while i'll admit it took me a LONG time to love it, i do like it. i'm not really a fan of LaChuisa to begin with so i think that's what was hard. i agree with the comment about Nikki M. James though. she really knows how to pack a wallop.

yay for intense acting!

#59Why does the Bernarda cast album sound bad?
Posted: 7/24/06 at 11:38pm

I loved Bernarda Alba when I saw it this past spring, and was excited when I bought the cast album off iTunes last week.

I have to say, however, that the show sounds terrible on CD. It sounds annoying and ridiculously off-key. It sounds out of tune. It sounds like the singers aren't together at all.

Was it like this when I saw it, and I was just transfixed by the theatrical experience not to notice the questionable singing? The show is still undeniably powerful on CD, but it's shrill. I'm disappointed I can't bring new people who didn't see the show into the fan club.

There is an excellent video feature on Broadway.com about the cast recording of BA. It is VERY in-depth (nearly 13 minutes long), and includes interviews with pretty much everyone involved...

Enjoy.

They have that same vid posted at http://www.sh-k-boom.com/BernardaAlba.html, only the sound isn't behind in the last third or so of the video like it is on Broadway.com.

I still haven't made the trip to get this. But I NEED to.

Just listened to the CD again after a while and surprisingly remembered every little thing about it.

Anyway, listening to it I was immediately transported to the theatre, watching it again. I forgothow simplisticly beautiful it was.

I don't care what the reveiws said, I think this was one of the most delicately beautiful productions I've ever seen.

I'm glad I saw it twice - it was never once boring.

I bought this album and though I had some issues with the way LaChiusa musicalized one of my favorite plays, overall the album has some delightful moments and a superb cast (except for Rashad, in my very personal opinion). "Love, Let Me Sing You" is such a beautiful number and Daphne Rubing-Vega nails Martirio. I wish she would play the part in the actual play though she'll make a great Bernarda Alba in the future.
