BERNARDA ALBA: Gone, but not missed.
Too easy.

Candy's understudy was in for the final performance.
That said, WOW. WOW. WOW.
What an amazing show on multiple levels. I was initially very hesitant at the idea of an English musical based on Bernarda Alba. But LaChuisa pulled it off. It was as beautiful and heartwrenching as its source is in Spanish.
I loved the score. Perfect and dramatic. Of course, I'm a big fan of flamenco (when it's done properly).
I had what could be considered a "bad seat"- near the top, on an extreme side (I was against the wall). Still, this house is so intimate that it worked.
Loved the set, with its starkness contrasting with the passionate music. Loved the use of props to accent the flamenco. It was also neat to see the orchestra on top of it all. For those who wonder about these things, there was a monitor with a live feed of the conductor center stage against the back wall so the actors could see the conductor.
I'm just sorry I didn't see the show earlier. Wow.

So maybe Candy is pissed....or she's really sick.
andyf - why can't a thread ever remain positive towards something?

That's so sad that she didn't make it, I saw her last Sunday and her voice was fading out everytime she tried to belt in the opening song.
I wanna hear this music now!

UGh. That monitor was so annoying. You can see the shadows flicker during the dark scenes over the audience.
I noticed at Studio 54 they use a red light for the TV.

I really loved Candy when I saw her - thought her voice/acting were great!
I assume the show went on as normal, but by chance were there any speeches or was the cast emotional (because it was the closing performance), etc?
re: Bernarda Alba - Going but NOT forgotten#32
Posted: 4/9/06 at 6:59pmI absolutely cannot wait to have this recording in my hands. The more I dwell on the show the more I desire to hear the music on repeat. I just feel like the music may have even more effect and power in a recorded medium.

How amazing does this CD sound?
The guitar rhythms sound so beautiful. It brings back great memories of sitting in that theatre.
I forgot how well LaChiusa created the atmosphere with his music!
Phylicia sounds so awesome.

I haven't stopped listening since I found it in the mailbox. The Prologue is fantastic, I forgot about so much of the music. From the second it starts to the last "Silence" the cd is pretty exciting. The montage with the girls came out particularly well and I love "Love, Let me sing you" and "Let me go to the sea".
Great preservation of the main elements of the show

Posted: 6/30/06 at 5:51pmholy s**t! I just got it in the mail today and it is beyond amazing. I've been listening to it all day and probably all weekend. I can only imgaine what it would have been to see it. I love Angustias's song. Daphne, sally murphy, Rashad, and the whole cast sound amazing! I also am extremely impressed with Nikki M. James who not only sounds incredible but gives a very well rounded performance on this recording. I love the orchestrations and the dramatic tension that carries through. I love the look of the cd and everything...it's great! and holy crap does Sh-K-Boom send stuff fast...I ordered this Tuesday and it came this morning...props to them.anyways happy listening everybody

Glad you love it like we do. It was such a unique experience in the theatre. Having studied Spanish culture, the music and sets really reflect the location. Excellent show and excellent production.
What do you guys think the show will become? Will it be staged again? Will regional theatres produce it a lot because of the lack of set?

Posted: 6/30/06 at 7:46pmI don't know...of course I hope that the show be produced regionally and find great success there. But, it doesn't seem to me that LaChiusa gets produced regionally too often. There was The Wild Party production in LA but other than that have there been too many? Is it b/c his stuff is "too hard" or complex? Anyways, I hope to see a production someday.

Posted: 6/30/06 at 7:49pmI almost hope that there isn't another production because I felt that this show was at its highest and was perfection! The cast was great, the sets, the intimacy of the theatre. It was just amazing and I'm so happy that we finally have a cd to recreate those memories.

Posted: 6/30/06 at 8:03pmBoth See What I Wanna See and Bernarda Alba strike me as the sort of shows that would find popularity with college theater and regional theater. It really just takes spreading the word about shows. Look at what happened for The Last Five Years.

Posted: 6/30/06 at 8:15pmI was kind of thinking that Roninjoey. I agree that there could be much success with college productions of these two shows. Has anyone heard of colleges doing any of his other works?
