"i think it is innovative and not pandering to the "easy" audience,"...I totally agree :)...and as someone who knows Groff personally, I'd love to hear about this "ego" that I've never noticed...

Without having seen half of the Best Musical contenders this season, NOBODY should be making any assumptions as to what will be taking it this year (even though we can hope! mmm Grey Gardens). As for Best Actor, isn't it a little obvious at this point as the Best Actress?
No, it is not, There are at least 2 or 3 or more performances in the Male Lead category that have not been seen or reviewed in New York. Raul has his champions but there are also many disparagers.
This category, unlike the Female is Wide Open.
My slow clap for Downer just got deleted!
EDIT* Whoops wrong thread.

Raul should win not only because he is phenomenal in COMPANY, but, unlike Pierce, he has given a series of raved about performances both on Broadway and Off, back since he made his Broadway debut in 2002.
1. Raul made his Broadway debut in 2000, not 2002.
2. David Hyde Pierce began his career in theatre and has been acting on and off Broadway since the early 1980s. He has a theatrical resume longer than your right arm.
So, know your facts if you're going to make snarky comments like that.
Umm, pardon.
1) It wasn't a snarky comment. But yours certainly was.
2) I'm well aware that Pierce started doing Broadway back in the 80s. But while Pierce was in L.A. filming his TV show, Esparza was in New York building an inertia that has continued and led up to this peak, breakthrough performance.
That was my point.
While I agree that Raul is very talented and should win the Tony for COMPANY, it's a bit rude to downgrade a great performer like Pierce because he chose to branch out into other mediums. Just because he doesn't exclusively focus on stagework like Raul doesn't make him any less worthy or talented.
1) I never said a word that downgraded Pierce as a performer.
2) I also never said the fact that he chose to branch out to other mediums makes him any less worthy or talented.
You're reading what you want to read.
In fact, my initial comment that you took issue with didn't say a word about David Hyde Pierce.
Let's just wait till Pierce's performance kicks ass, which I hear it does.
Pierce is very well respected and liked in the Broadway community.
I never said he wasn't. You're creating your own arguments.

Bottom line is Curtains hasn't opened yet, nor has Lovemusik, so we don't actually know what Pierce or Cerveris will do with their roles. Even the best artists are occasionally miscast, or may just be "off" in a particular role...

The bigger problem the Tonys have is how often Best Musical goes to the most commercial choice rather than the most artistically accomplished show (due in large part to the large contingent of road voters who often prefer to vote their wallets over their heads and hearts).
Is there anyway to fix this?
I mean I didn't get that Spamalot won Best Musical until I realized the award went to the producers. Would returning the award to the collaborative team solve anything, or would it just give the award that should be going to a different show to different people?
Raul should win not only because he is phenomenal in COMPANY, but, unlike Pierce, he has given a series of raved about performances both on Broadway and Off, back since he made his Broadway debut in 2002.
You're saying that Raul has given raved about performances and Pierce hasn't with that statement. I'm not reading anything into it. You wrote it. That's the last I'm saying on the matter.

NO!
Oh, dear. Again, selective reading.
I said that unlike Pierce, Esparza has has given a SERIES of raved about performances in the short period of time since he made his debut.
THAT was my point.
Did you read the part about INERTIA? Do you not know what that means?
Yes, darling, I know what inertia means. You're saying, then, that Esparza deserves the Tony because he's stayed in New York, worked steadily in theatre, and gotten generally good reviews. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm personally of the school that the most deserving performance should win the Tony, but I realize that line of thinking isn't for everybody. Whatevs.
Congratulations.
Pierce will win cause he is a nice guy.
chew on that
The same case could be made for Cerveris, then. I don't mean to fight with you; I just kinda hate it when people say that performers should win because of their body of work and not their performance, although Raul does give a knockout performance. That said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You have yours and I have mine.
While some might vote for Cerveris because he should have won last year, plenty will probably vote for Esparza if they thought he deserved to win for TABOO.
He was a mess and a f*ck up to everyone who worked on TABOO.
I'd really like to see D'arcy James get a nom for The Apple Tree. I just feel like he is very deserving of it. His Adam is such a pleasure to watch. His Flip is a hoot. Sanjar is excellent as well.
