It really bugs me when people say that "so and so shouldn't win because she just won a Tony a few years ago" or "so and so should win because of all she went through to get to where she is" or "so and so should win because she got shafted a few years ago" or "so and so should win because she has been around for a long time". The Tony's should be about one role in one show of the current year of being nominated, the past or the back stage story should have nothing to do with it. This should be about an individual's PERFORMANCE and nothing else.
Please do not think I am being naive in my statements. I understand that it is all politics, it just bugs me that it isn't about performance anymore.

I'm afraid Victoria will win--
I think Sutton or Sherie Deserve it...probably Sherie since she doesn't have one! but I like Sutton in her role better.
I want someone I SAW to win :)

Posted: 5/13/05 at 9:34pmVictoria Clark has one of the best leading female roles ever written in "Light In The Piazza"...and that score is some complex undertaking. She's also been working as a trouper under the radar for so many years, I think voters will want to reward that.

I agree that you should only win if you deserve it. I don't like that "well, it's their time to win" crap. Who's ever giving the female performance of the year should win. If this means Clark wins, I'm fine with that. But I'm tired of hearing about how she deserves to win because she's put in her time and it's now appropriate for her to take home a Tony. As much as I want Sutton to win, I don't see it happening, unfortunately.

Great group of talented Women.
I'm not really sure how Erin Dilly got this nominee.
I went back and reread a bunch of CCBB reviews and she is hardly mentioned. Oh right, there was that JukeBox Musical Blackballing (that is a stupid theory, those shows are just not as good as the nominees and it is harder to do good work in a not so good show.
and the Dumb Producers on BKLYN put Eden in supporting!!!!!
I think Sutton is a terriffis Actress/Singer, her material in LW is just not tha strong but i felt the same way about TMM so who knows?
I was Happily suprised at Christina's Performance, it is a thing of JOY, not the most polished but she is so winning, just not enough to win this year.
Sherie Blew me away in DRS just as she did in AIDA and L5Y, and I was so Happy she finally found a Great Part that shows off her Voicd and Comedic Talent. She is just Amazing!
But
As several have mentioned MS. Clark's role is probly the best written this year, Book and Musically, and She rises to the Challenge like the Musical Comedy Giantess She is.
I think Vicky Wins here!

Posted: 5/13/05 at 11:38pmIt's a bit late to mention this, but earlier Bwaysinger and possibly Penguin were talking about what Clark was in, and Bwaysinger mentioned she was in Urinetown. Am I missing something here? She's not on the cast recording...was she a replacement?

Victoria Clark's perfomance is so thoughtful, centered, emotional and crafted that it is, agreed, the best performance of any actress on Broadway this season, dramatic or musical.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 9:28amI think Sutton deserves to win- she is amazing in Little Women! But Little Women was pretty much snubbed by the nominators, so I'm afraid she doesn't have a chance.

Agreed- it's hard to choose. But hey, I have a soft spot for Sherie and Sutton. Little Women was definitely cheated- sure, the score isn't incredible, but characterization makes up for that lack.
Anyhoo- both girls deserve it.

Tonya Pinkins--she was from Caroline or Change right?
(Based on singing aspect--not acting)if her performance was anything like it was on the Tony awards than she is HORRIBLE..she screamed through the WHOLE SONG! but if I'm saying that then Idina didn't really deserve it either cuz she went flat a lot!
I'm assuming it either wasn't supposed to be sang well or that was just a bad performance.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 4:23pmTonya Pinkins in Caroline made that role her own... no one can play that part like she did. Idina, it's already been proved that many can play that part the same or better than her.. Tonya made Caroline, she put her soul into that... her acting is incredible and I love her voice.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 4:40pmI never made a comment about Tonya's acting, nor have I seen the show. I commented about her ghastly vocal performance on the Tonys. I have no doubt she was fabulous in her role. I also KNOW that Idina is not the owner of Elphaba--Stephanie is!
