I grew up in Georgia and lived in North Carolina, most people did not sound like that, but the rich women on the coast sounded EXACTLY like that. I have also lost most of my accent over the years, but I can still pull off several of the dialects. the big thing is that every area is so distinct, the people in the mountains of NC where I lived sound nothing like the reasearch triangle or the coast, and South Carolina is different beast altogether. I also see it as a good character move to be trying very hard to hide the accent when in Italy, she wants not to stick out. I think the way it varries (it never entirely disappears) is very appropriate. All of this is from someone who was not nearly as blown away by her performance as many.

I know Penguin what the accent is she is attempting. Charleston is full of women like her character, I just think she goes in and out of it, and honestly don't believe its a character choice. Why would she try to lose her accent in front of the Italians? I can understand her trying to speak more clearly when she is trying to speak English to people who don't understand the language, but losing her accent doesn't make her fit in any better in Italy when she doesn't speak Italian.
Anyway, its a moot point. Clark will win the Tony regardless of her inconsistant accent

Its guarenteed that Victoria will win, but I havent seen her to judge.
I think Sutton deserves it, but then again ive only seen her and SRS in this category.

Hehe. How many other people have won with horribly bad accents? I think it's a moot point, too, only because it seems to also be a personal decision whether or not she's good at it.

Again I think Charleston is a very different accent
Oh well, it was one of my favorite things about the character.
Lots of people from where I'm from always try to lose their accent whenever they travel. It very well might not be a character choice, but it seemed to me like one.
But no problems. She will most likely win the Tony anyway, although I am not actually rooting for her.

Shush, Pengy, you're dulling the huge, whopping crush I have on you.

bwaysinger, I can't be on all the time, I'm not Superman or even Tobey McGuire here.

Yes, but see, in my fantasy world, you are.
So I'll just keep pretending all of your Tony predictions match mine.
With that, I repeat again. I'm excited and scared to be seeing Charity tonight. I want to believe the hype here on this board about applegate's performance...but I'm afraid I'm going to believe the hype regarding the horrendous choreography/direction and I'm just not sure I believe any performer can, in my mind, overcome those kinds of obstacles to still wow me.
Plus, I just can't think of "I'm a Brass Band" without seeing Gwen Verdon.

Are you one of the Sutton groupies Bwaysinger?
I'm afraid you may just predicted your fate at Charity. Somehow I still had a good time though.
thanks Drew

LOL! Oh, Pengy, you wound me. How could you not see the shameless shilling I have been putting about for the fabulous-and-way-overdue Victoria Clark?
Loved her in H2$. Dazzled by her in Urinetown. Loved her in Titanic (just the album, wasn't here for the show). Now she is creating an original and AMAZINGLY well-written character...it's time!
And you can accompany me to the Tonys, right, Pengy?

Hey if I were going to be in the city at Tony time, I'd so be there. I'm off to the mountains of North Carolina for the summer though!
Clark is so, so overdue! In Urininetown and Titanic she is fabulous (cast recordings unfortunately are all I can go by) You know I kid, but it hardly seems like you are shilling her at all.

This is the 2nd rare year in a row where the person whom I feel deserves the win IS going to win. I hope. I pray.

I want Christina to win, but I don't think she will.
But I really hope she does! :)

Posted: 5/13/05 at 2:23pmAlso adding my two cents that Victoria should and will win. If you simply go by the performance she gave, there is no contest, and if the Tony voters choose to vote for anything other than who gave the best performance, I will be pissed.

Wickedrentq, we can all pretty much agree that, despite who should win, things often come down to politics. They could easily play into Clark's favor but they could just as easily not.
Still, yay to one more person on the Clark train.

Posted: 5/13/05 at 2:46pmI've seen Sutton Foster and Victoria Clark and I want Sutton to win. Both of them performed their roles beautifully and I know that Victoria Clark will probably win, but I think that Sutton Foster's more talented. Oh well. As it said in "Making It On Broadway", the base of the Tony is made of plastic.

My money is that Sutton Foster will be getting her second tony because when I saw Little Women, she was just phenomenal. She had a great presence on stage, and she has such a fantastic voice.

I think Sherie was robbed in AIDA. I adore Heather and thought she was brilliant but Sherie should have won for AIDA as it was a totally amazing role and she was amazing in it.
So I want her to win. I just think she is the cats meow.
Then I wish Christina wins (she has literally put her whole heart in that role. She may not be the best but it is definately one of those moments in history where you give it cause you just have to.

Chances of winning:
Victoria Clark- 50%
Sutton Foster- 20%
Christina Applegate- 12%
Sherie Rene Scott- 10%
Erin Dilly- 8%
Clark will win. Although Ive yet to see Applegate, I think she should win just for her amazing determination. Sutton has a Tony already and her performance in LW while great doesnt have the same surprisingly great quality that her Millie did. Sherie will win sooner or later, without a doubt. Erin needs a better show to showcase her amazing talents and will win a Tony soon as well.

I'll repeat what I feel SHOULD happen when the show crosses over...Erin Dilly should be Mary Poppins.
And there will lie her Tony.
#47re: Best Actress in a Musical
Posted: 5/13/05 at 5:25pmHonestly, I can't imagine anyone winning a Tony for playing Mary Poppins. In this production, Mary is almost a secondary character, and the reason Laura Michelle Kelly won an Olivier for the role is because her only competition was Maria Friedman who has won three already, including one the year prior.

what i dont get is why an actor has to be overlooked for an award if they have won one previously. its las if its impossible, where its trully just unfair.
clark will win. sutton should win.
