No. The two I didn't don't interest me in the slightest.
But that doesnt' mean I can't have an opinion.
And has EVERY Tony voter seen EVERY performance? Aren't there threads on that very subject? Should they not be allowed to vote without seeing ALL of them?? Is that what you're suggesting??
I continue to be amazed and saddened by the nasty posts re Ms. Lansbury and the play. At 81 she is giving her all to this trifle and for that alone she deserves r-e-s-p-e-c-t.
No, DEUCE is not a good play and I wonder why McNally did not improve it before rehearsals. Is this a tax write-off? I am not really a fan of his plays as he is too PC for my taste. But to give this dreck like this to two peerless actresses?
As to the 'forgetting lines', it is actually quite appropriate to the situation [i.e., two women watching a tennis match in a crowded arena trying to talk to each other and look at the match] and character. If this were MAME and she dropped lines in the middle of IT'S TODAY then I would worry. :)
As for Julie White, she was great in another mediocre play. She could win for Best Actress in a "yet another mediocre play about gay issues by yet another mediocre gay playwright". Her chances are slight as the show closed many months ago.
Who's being nasty? People respect Ms. Lansbury, but no one wants to see her win a Tony because she is a legend coming back in an awful show, when Julie White and Eve Best are giving far better performances. I mean, Lansbury's performance in Deuce wasn't exactly her greatest, and nor is it Tony-worthy.
jordangirl, all I'm saying is that you cannot expect to come on here and post that you feel Eve Best deserves the Tony Award over the rest of the performances in her category when you have not seen all of the performances in her category. It's basic logic.
fflagg, the bottom line is that Julie White's play received a Tony nomination for Best Play, while Lansbury's play did not. That puts White in a much better place than Lansbury, as the Nominating Committee is saying that White's play as a whole is worthy of recognition. Whatever your personal opinion is of THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED is irrelevant. The FACTS are that THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED is a Tony Nominee for Best Play, while DEUCE, the most panned play of the season, is not.

Foster you are 100% right. It is plain and simple, the fact that The Little Dog Laughed is nominated for Best Play and that Julie White is the only nominee coming from a nominated production makes her in my mind the clear frontrunner even if her show has been gone for a while. I am not sure why people are not taking that into consideration.
So...Wanna Be...
You would disqualify all the Tony voters who aren't able to see every performance? Because from what I've read on here, that's always mentioned. That there are people who vote who haven't seen all the shows. What's the difference?
The difference is that we're not voting for the Tonys here. We're having a discussion on a message board about which of the five nominees we feel most deserves to win. Your argument that Eve Best should win when you have not seen all of the nominees and express no interest in having seen them holds little water in such a circumstance.
Fine.
Of those I saw, Eve Best deserves to win.
Happy now?
My God, Foster is such a joke.
The fact that Julie White is from a play nominated for Best Play has NOTHING to do with her chances, especially when against a legend.
Lansbury's legendary status will, by far, eclipse ANY lead White may have had with a best play.
Please.

Here is my order of preference:
1. Julie White
2. Vanessa Redgrave
3. Eve Best
4. Angela Lansbury
5. Swoosie Kurtz
But we are discussing who we think WILL WIN, right? I think Julie White will win, despite the play having closed a while ago. I can't think of a single time the tony went to a legendary actress simply because of name recogniton - that's one of the things I admire about the tonys - even if I don't agree with a choice, they do try to honor really worthwhile performances. (I'd have to look at a list to see if there were any performances that I thought were awful that have won in the past; I do remember feeling that Christine Ebersole won her first tony for what was really a featured, not lead, performance in 42nd Street)
btw, I liked all five performances and love all five of these actresses. Julie White simply gave the best performance by an actress in a leading role this season, IMO.
