MY ROMANCE by Lorenz Hart.
JAVERT'S SUICIDE in Les Mis by Herbert Kretzmer is quite brilliant.

City of Angels
You Can Always Count on Me (the whole song is filled with them)
But, my favorite is...
I don't need a map,
I naturally head for the dead end street,
You can always count on me...
and also...
Though my kind of dame no doubt will die out like the dinosaurs,
You can always count on me,
I'm solely to blame,
My head gives advice that my heart ignores,
I'm my only enemy
Brilliant

Almost anything from Rent
#16re: Best Broadway Lyric?
Posted: 1/29/06 at 12:52amThere so many that I can't possibly pick but one of the best is "Shes the climax of your technicolor dreams" from Kiss of the Spider Woman. Most of Sweeney and Rent are great as well but I don't think you can pick just one lyric.
"I am sorry but it is an unjust world and virtue is only triumphant in theatricle performances" The Mikado

Thesbijean, I have had that song on a constant repeat for the past few days! My personal favorite is "I'm no femme fatale, but faithful and true as a saint bernarnd, barkin' up the wrong damn tree."
Also every single word in A Little Priest. "Here's a politician so oily it's served with a doily. Have one. Put it on a bun. Well, you never know if it's going to run."

I agree. Nothing against Rent, but we're talking best lyrics of ALL TIME.
I second "A Little Priest" - that song's about as good as it gets.
Also from Sweeney Todd: "There's a hole in the world like a great black pit and the vermin of the world inhabit it, and its morals aren't worth what a pit could spit..."

Please forgive me, but I had to pick a whole song becuase the lyrics are so incredible:
I Only Have Eyes for You (42nd Street)
My love must be a kind of blind love
I can't see anyone but you.
Are the stars out tonight?
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
I Only Have Eyes For You, Dear.
The moon maybe high
but I can't see a thing in the sky,
'Cause I Only Have Eyes For You.
I don't know if we're in a garden,
or on a crowded avenue.
You are here
So am I
Maybe millions of people go by,
but they all disappear from view.
And I Only Have Eyes For You.

Thesbijean -- for me, you have the right show, but the wrong song (not to disparage that one, but it's not my favorite from CoA):
And come to think of it
Your writing always mirrored our relationship
With dangers popping up
And sweet young strangers popping up like weeds
So if you wish official pardoning
You better do a little gardening
You know you needn't be so generous with your seeds
Your fertile lies don't fertilize
It needs work.
My second favorite lyric, also from CoA:
You drool at my adventures
Your broads in bed are bored
Go home and soak your dentures
Your pen is no match for my sword

OK, not to be a party crasher, but this thread is about specific Broadway lyrics, right? So pick a lyric or 100, but saying "Anything from RENT, SWEENEY, WICKED..." doesn't really answer the question. If you want to start a Best Score thread, go right ahead.
