re: Greastest Broadway Line

Feb 19, 2006 — 7:12:06 PM

Not a musical , but a great line from America's greatest playwright.

"Once and for all you must know that there's a universe of people outside, and you're responsible to it."

ALL MY SONS (Arthur Miller)

Should ALW throw in the towel?

Feb 9, 2006 — 8:22:40 PM

Certainly not. He is quite young as broadway composers go. Maybe he should take a leaf out of my book and start writing classical music. I have had nine shows produced in the last thirteen years and wrote my first opera in 2004. Believe me, it's much more fun as you don't get your best songs cut by the director at the last preview. He wants that freedom, that power, he should definitely write an opera .

re: Mark Hellinger Theatre/Times Square Church question

That looks like a real gem of a theatre. I have always thought of it in connection with My Fair Lady, which must have suited it to perfection. It looks like a match for the most sumptuous house in the West End, which is Her Majesty's.

OMG! That finishes him off doesn't it! I mean - to think he dared to run around in his underwear - dared to have a good body even - when all the time he was ....ugh...bald! What a loser.

This guy sounds like someone I would rather spend time with than people who are shocked that your hair fell out when you were still young,

re: Best Broadway Lyric?

Les Mis was universally derided by the British press and theatre
opinion-makers when it first opened in London, but of course the last laugh is on them. I would rate Herbert Kretzmer's lyrics as worthy of a Pulitzer.
To quote almost at random:
"this innocent who wears my face, who goes to judgement in my place"
Not a word out of place. Perfect sense, perfect stress, perfect singability. The three S's of musical theater lyrics.

I love also PACIFIC OVERTURES:

"It's a herb that's superb for disturbances at sea" - (CHRYSANTHEMUM TEA)

MY ROMANCE by Lorenz Hart.
JAVERT'S SUICIDE in Les Mis by Herbert Kretzmer is quite brilliant.

Worst. Lyrics. EVER.

Jan 28, 2006 — 9:40:45 PM

...and it's good evening from him.

Worst lyrics? The entire song THINK OF ME from PHANTOM. Comtains such marvels as
"You never said our love was evergreen
Or as unchanging as the sea".

Also from PHANTOM , this time from the celebrated MUSIC OF THE NIGHT:
"Let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write".

What on earth does this mean?
