"ok, the first time I went into the Gershwin, I had had a few Martinis, but still, my eyes watered at the beauty, and the hisory."
What history? The Gershwin is one of the newest Broadway theatres. Didn't it open sometime in the late '70s?
I think my favorite theater might be the Booth, simply because of its center aisle in the orchestra which means fewer people to walk over to get out. I also like the American Airlines, Walter Kerr and the Circle in the Square.
I like the Nederlander becuase of the atmosphere of it and how perfectly it works for it's particular show. But, the seats are SO damn small.

THE MARQUIS, for comfort and technical merits,
but I really prefer the architecture of the older theatres, especially those that open right onto the street, the smaller the better, with a real marquee: THE GOLDEN.
THE ST. JAMES, I think is the best of the larger houses.
I also like the the retro stile of THE HILTON.
THE GERSWIN is nice too, for its "hisory"? Maybe Sally meant the Hall of Fame in the lobby.

The Palace Theatre is one of my favorites -- it's just beautiful.
The Belasco is at the top of the list (dracula!)
I've always loved The Shubert, The Palace and The Richard Rodgers.
The Marquis's theater is great, but finding it is...well...annoying.
I really like the imperial because it's just the right size for any show. I also like the Virginia Theatre because of it's decor in the auditorium.
I've yet to see a show at the Marquis where it sounded like the orchestra was in the same building. It's such a dead shell acoustically, that everything you get is pumped to you through the sound system. It's true of the other modern houses as well, but I always notice it the most at the Marquis.
I love the Gershwin, I feel like a movie star every time I go up those stairs! It's so big!
Um, the Al Hirshfield is pretty neat. I sat on row D I think for Wonderful Town....WOW.
I like the Ford Center where 42nd Street was. It's so RED and BLUE I love it. I lost my cell phone there, and I got to go backstage to retrieve it! haha
New Amsterdam
Lyceum
Belasco
Majestic
In that order
For comfort/size, I like the Virginia Theatre. For atmosphere, it's definitely the NEderlander.

chas goose: TO answer your question, the Gershwin used to be named the Uris Theatre (i'm pretty sure, but i oculd be wrong)and there were many plays an musicals there. (sweeney todd)
Here are my top pics -
- - For technical reasons I love the Minskoff! It isn't a gorgeous theatre, and many think it's quite ugly, but when you really get right down to it, it is on of the most "techincally" equipped theaters on Broadway. I do have to say however, that is does have a nice view of Times square as well.
- - In terms of beauty, and atmosphere, I would have to say the Belasco Theater would take that prize for me, it's a gorgeous theater, and really the theater is great in terms of theatricality! I personally love the stage....I think that producers underestimate it's size, and therefore refrain from housing larger musicals in it. After seeing Dracula and a few other shows, I would like to see the theater used to the fullest of it's capabilities. It's a wonderfully intimate theater, and I love attending shows there.
.....I do understand what someone said about the Gershwin.....When I saw Wicked, I felt that the orchestra was a little lost in the midst of the theater's enormous house, other than that I thought that it fit the show well.
See Ya!
