While I certainly agree that the cretinous Mr. Smith etc. needs to be banned for life, you are disruptive in that you positively annoy the shït out of everyone.

On "Watch what happens live" recently Bernadette Peters was asked what her favourite role is, and she said Rose (Gypsy). I find it interesting that despite having several iconic performances (Sunday and Into the Woods in particular), she would pick a role that she is perhaps less well known for. But I can understand it because the role truly is one of the great musical theatre roles.

and ready for another broadway revival soon
Really appreciate ethel mermans massive contributions to musical theatre and wish i could have seen her perform live, but there is something in the tonality of of Merman's voice that always makes me want to change the channel

Based on recordings alone (except of Lansbury, whom I saw many times), Lansbury was indeed less "fierce" early in the play. In fact, I briefly questioned whether she was too "likable" as Rose and was unwilling to play the part as harshly as it is written.
But Angela's "Rose's Turn" was as fierce as anyone's, a virtual mad scene out of Bel Canto opera. And the warmth she showed earlier in the play only made her final defeat more tragic--because she really did believe she "did it for you, baby", etc.
Put more simply, it has been reported several places that Merman got unintentional laughs at the beginning of "Everything's Coming Up Roses". Angela did not, because as outrageous as the reversal is, she had shown in earlier moments that she did care, in her own way, for her girls. The key is, "in her own way".
A striking moment to me was in an early scene where Rose tells Baby June she has to go to bed because she needs her rest to perform the next day. Louise pops up with "What about me? Don't I need my rest? I have a show tomorrow, too." And Rose responds, "It's not the same, baby." Angela delivered that last line with such tenderness, it took a moment to realize she was also cruelly showing her preference for the other sister, the one with talent. It added a layer of complexity to Rose's character and also helped explain why the kids weren't constantly acting out and rebelling against their domineering mother.

Gaveston, total agreement. Saw Lansbury in London (June 1973), The Kennedy Center, and then Gaitherburg MD when she did it on the circuit. She was, in truth, my first Rose, but she remains my favorite, the one that broke my heart as no other since.
