If that rumor about Sutton Foster is true, then the Best Leading Actress in a Musical category is going to be THE most interesting in years. Don't forget Nellie McKay, Cyndi Lauper, and Ana Gasteyer in The Threepenny Opera, I expect Cyndi Lauper to surprise everyone, her singing is spectacular. Also, the dancers in The Time They Are A-Changing are likely to get Featured Role nominations.
BETH LEAVEL, BETH LEAVEL, BETH LEAVEL, BETH LEAVEL, BE....oh, excuse me, got excited there for a moment! LOL..
Anyhoo..
I thought Beth might get a nom for Featured Actress and Sutton get a nod as Best Actress, or Leading Actress, whatever the main role category is. Isn't Sutton the star of the show with the bigger part? I haven't seen it yet, just heard about it.

In it's current incarnation, the parts are about equal, but BETH LEAVEL is fabulous. Her part is a bit showier, has room for more playing and will bring down the house. She's one of the many great surprises in Drowsy Chaperone.

These Types they are A Changin isnt coming till the fall I think
I havent seen most of the shows yet, but I really hope that Donna Lynn Champlin gets a nomination. She was incredible in the show and is really the glue that holds it together. Both instrumentally (she plays a lot of instruments and is the conductor) and also in the concept of the show (being the head of the mental institution)
I'm almost certain Lauper will be considered Featured. In the new translation, she only has one solo song, "Solomon Song". Several years ago, when the producers of NINE wanted Chita Rivera to be considered a lead, the committee turned them down because she only had one solo song. I see the same thing happening here. Also, I think Nellie McKay will be considered Lead---Polly is a HUGE role, with "Pirate Jenny", "Barbara Song", "Jealousy Duet", etc.
My predictions:
Megan Lawrence-The Pajama Game
Elisabeth Withers-Mendes-The Color Purple
Beth Leavel-The Drowsy Chaperone
Cyndi Lauper-Threepenny Opera
Felicia Fields-The Color Purple
It'll go to either Lawrence or Mendes.
I have not seen TCP.
I love all the women in Sweeney, but I think its hard to single any of them out. I would assume that if it happens, Donna Lynne Champlin will be the one to get it because of her great performance here in a tough role, and her stellar past work (no nom for Hollywood Arms was a travesty).
Megan Lawrence was beyond hysterical in PJ Game. I really REALLY hope she gets one. I mean it, she was just out of this WORLD.
Drowsy Chaperone I am SO excited for. Beth Leavel and Sutton seem to be strong contenders.
Then there are the Color Purple women, Fields and Mendes.
I don't really know 3penny, but depending on how it is received, Ana Gasteyer, Neilie McKay?
Then we have Spanger and Finley for Wedding Singer.
Carolee possibly for Lestat.
I would have thought MAYBE MAYBE Paice for WiW, but that is now obviously not going to happen.
My guess is that the 5 will all be taken from this Pool of women:
Amy Spanger
Felicia Finley
Donna Lynne Champlin
Carolee Carmello
Megan Lawrence
Sutton Foster (leading?)
Beth Leavel
Neilie McKay
Ana Gasteyer
Felicia Fields
Elisabeth Winters Mendes
Narrowing that down, here are 4 of the 5 I think we'll end up with:
Amy Spanger
Felicia Fields
Beth Leavel
Megan Lawrence
the 5th is the wildcard slot.

I'll say it again... Beth Leavel
With all of the negative word on the street regarding LESTAT, and the huge selection we already have of actresses from well-received shows, I think Carolee, much as we love her, can kiss her chances at a nomination goodbye.
i think that Donna Lynne Champlin will win.
However, in my eyes Diana DiMarzio, the beggar woman in Sweeney, deserves it more. I think her performance was so amazing but for some reason she was overshadowed although I think she blows both Champlin and Molina away.
Felicia Fields, Color Purple
Beth Leavel, The Drowsy Chaperone
Amy Spangler, The Wedding Singer
Roz Ryan, The Pajama Game
Merle Dandridge, Tarzan (based on what I hear)
Really hope Beth Leavel wins it. Just love her!
What about Angela Christian from WIW! She is amazing! I know the show didn't do to well but she was amazing! I would put her in over Jill Paice though...
Champlin and Molina from Sweeney both deserve it, because they are both wonderful! I really loved them more than all the others that I have seen.
OK, a few things:
It's Amy Spanger (not Spangler).
Any critical reception Angela Christian got was negative. The only performer The Woman in White can count on for a nomination is Maria Friedman.

i put my bets on either Felicia or Elisabeth for TCP. Both roles are so demanding, and they really give it their all, and are astounding! if Sutton enters the race, though, things will get pretty interesting...
this is really going to be an exciting year in the leading actress and supporting actress categories!!!
i would love to see sutton get the leading nomination. that category is going to be insane.
my vote also (as of right now because i have yet to see the pajama game) goes to lauren molina for featured actress. i think she's fabulous.
I don't care how many instruments she played in Sweeney Todd. I found Donna Lynne Champlin almost unwatchable.
Really? I loved Donna's performance as Pirelli. Not just what she did during her song, and her lines, but her performance when she wasn't exactly in the spotlight.
She makes faces - one of my least favorite types of performances.
I've seen TCP, Sweeney, and the Pajama Game. Out of all the ladies from those shows, I believe the Tony should go to either Molina or Withers Mendes!
I wonder though, why the producers of "Drowsy" would want to push Sutton into an already crowded lead category...wouldn't she have a much better shot in the supporting category?

yeah, i agree!
puzzling...
Why do I smell a Joel Grey in "Chicago" situation again with Sutton?
I definitely think they should keep Sutton in featured.
I'm dying to know if Molina or Donna will get nominated for Sweeney. At this point, there is little chance both will be nominated. The categorie is getting crowded! Molina is very new to Broadway, so she will have many more chances. Donna is a seasoned performer, who was sadly overlooked by the Tonys before. Now may be her chance.
Something random not relating to the Tonys. In the Sweeney revival, right before Sweeney kills Pirelli does Donna sing the "You t'ink-a you smart, you foolish-a boy..." part? I saw the revival, but couldn't remember if they cut that or not.
I think Fields will take the Tony- Hands down. She's sensational.
