I'd love to see either of the Sweeney Todd women nominated, but I can't for the life of me decide which one has a better shot. Lauren has the ultimate "featured" role as Johanna and performs it beautifully. Donna Lynne Champlin does a fantastic job as Prielli, in addition to being vital to the orchestra and set movements. Donna has, as pointed out by others, turned in great performances before-- but impressive Broadway debuts are also noteworthy. Anyway, I doubt that they'll both be nominated, but in my opinion they're on pretty equal footing.
ljay -- Yes, I believe Donna does sing that part in the show.

I told Donna that alot of you were saying she is going to get nominated on Wed when I saw Sweeney again. She was flattered and she said thanks to everyone who said that.
Anyway, I still say that all of the Sweeney women should be nominated because they are all brilliant but Diana deserves it the most. Her beggar woman is so well acted and she gives one of the finest performances in the entire show.

Amy Spanger in THE WEDDING SINGER. Mark my words. She's sensational.

It makes sense that they'd beef up Sutton's part. Less because of the Tony (I love her but I don't think she really has a shot at the Tony this year, and they probably know it) but more because she's about the only thing they currently have to sell the show, which isn't saying all that much. Give Sutton a big role and all the teenies will come. Maybe they'll give her another "Astonishing" song.
It seems to me Lauren Molina's more of a lock for a nomination than Donna Lynne (Her actual portrayal of the part is not Tony worthy, her instrument playing aside). I don't think Diana DiMarzio's even in the running for it. Her beggar woman is totally lost in the direction of the show.
I haven't seen Color Purple yet but my bad knee creaks whenever I read that one chick's name... Fields?

I think Lauren Molina ought to get it for finally making the character of Johanna likable. For me, at least. Seriously, though, she's doing a great job and I know people have said that Johanna isn't a very Tony-worthy role, but I think the way Molina is juggling the comedic/dramatic aspects of the role is really amazing.
I like Donna a lot but I don't think her performance is that noteworthy--nor do I see her winning.
Honestly, though, I see this going to Fields. I didn't think she was too thrilling, but for some reason, I really see Fields winning this.

Sutton Foster DOES NOT SELL TICKETS.
Thoroughly Moderm Millie sold tickets because it won Best Musical and was about NYC. Even that show didn't even make it's money back.
Little Women, one of the most popular books of ALL TIME didn't even sell based on it's name, let alone because Sutton Foster was in it.
Chaperone better have a great Marketing/Ad/Publicity plan, or it won't do well.

I don't know what planet people live on that they think Sutton sells tickets!

Note that in my post after I said she's about the only thing they currently have to sell the show, I said: which isn't saying all that much.
It's not so much that they are hoping people will come because it's SUTTON FOSTER in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE! It's because they're hoping people will create a buzz about her performance, which is what happened with Millie to some extent. That's why they built Little Women around her, they are hoping she'll manage to impress people (ala Idina Menzel in Wicked) so that some buzz is generated.
Little Women didn't sell because it blew, and Wicked was playing a few blocks away. I'd go see the flying witch over the girl in the dress running around with her sisters if I was a 10 year old girl too.

Posted: 3/12/06 at 1:27pmBuzz about Sutton's perf had NO direct impact on sales whatsoever. Buzz about the show, and how it was a fun musical about NYC that won the Best Musical Tony is what picked up ticket sales slight post June 2002.

Posted: 3/12/06 at 3:46pmYou guys are all crazy! :) Patti LuPone even wrote on her website about how much of a fantastic actress Diana is in the show and how she is a pleasure to watch on the stage. Her performance is perfect and even if it is not as showy as others, she nails the role. Mark my words, she will get a nomination.

Hm...Sutton in the featured category. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
Has any actress ever won for Best Actress and LATER won for Featured Actress? It seems like since she's already been seen in a better role, her chances of winning or even being nominated for Chaperone are slim.

Felicia Fields is definitely not worthy of a Tony - no way in hell.
IF someone from TCP were to take it, it will be Mendes.

Yet when she left the show, sales DID drop. Just sayin'...

My two cents go to Withers-Mendes who's Shug Avery was so touching and honest. I hope that she takes home the award. Loved Fields, Champlin and Molina also just felt that the best performance was given by Withers-Mendes. Didn't get to see PG due to it being sold out, but my friends said Megan Lawrence was wonderful.
Cheers,
Christopher
